Little help in Corvallis
Just moved back to Corvallis for the college year. Went out this weekend to do some hunting for grouse and deer. Or should I say scouting. Seemed like every road was closed in the area and almost everything else was private. I know there has got to be someone out there who went to OSU for a few years who could help clue me in on good spots to hunt for deer, grouse, ducks and such. I plan on spending afternoons and weekends this fall after some kind of game. Any help would be appreciated. Spent the evening outside of Kings Valley and around Bald and Green Mts. and did manage to get a Band-tailed on the last day of the season. Other than that not a single other bird in sight. Should I bother w/ the Coast Range or just hit the Cascades? Seems like it's best to stay S. of the highway in the Siuslaw Natl Forest or does the timberland open up soon? Any help or advice would be appreciated. I have another 3 years here so I figure I'd better start learning the area if I ever hope to get out. Thanks again for any help.

Re: Little help in Corvallis
As soon as the fire danger kicks down and rifle deer season gets underway Starker Forests opens up quite a few of their gates.
You need to go to the main office (a mile before Philomath on the left ----heading west)to get a FREE hunting permit from them. They will give you maps and let you know what is open for hunting. Many times you can walk behind the gates.....with their blessing. Just make sure you get the use permit. Good Luck!

Re: Little help in Corvallis
Birdhunter
I was in Corvallis on the extended plan from 1981 to 1987. I never bird hunted, but did take quite a few deer out of the Marys Peak general area. It has been quite a while since I have been up there, but I would hunt on the Alsea side of Mary's peak. There was a little lake called Klickitat lake that was kind of the general central area I hunted.. More of a pond, than a lake, but I believe it was called Klickitat lake. Small pond with lots of logs floating on it, and a few guys would be trout fishing it. I hunted all around the lake and never failed to find plenty of deer. I am sure you could find it on a good map.
Hope this helps as a general area to go look. I dont remember any of the roads having gates on them.

Re: Little help in Corvallis
I too am looking for a place to do some hunting. I however am strictly interested in spring turkey season. Have heard that there are some in the Kings Valley area. Anybody have any info as to where in the Corvallis/Philomath area there is some land a guy can get on to for a decent turkey hunt?
Figured I would start looking early. Would like to avoid NE Oregon/Roseburg because of how far a way these places are.Hope you guys can help.

Saw 6 big toms yesterday in Kings Valley. Just off of 223. All on private land though.

Birdhunter:
When I was there in the early '80's (I know I had to run into BOE somewhere) they used to open up the Corvallis watershed on weekends. I saw some excellent bucks in there and we ended up harvesting a large 3 point and a 4 point that just missed B&C. Check it out.

Re: Little help in Corvallis
Just wanted to thank everyone for giving me some tips. Only on ifish. Have been looking around some more and think I might have some spots. Also talking to friends on campus and some ODFW guys. Picked up a Siuslaw Forest map too. If any of you need any help w/ the White River area near Mt. Hood, S. Cascades around Ashland, Pine Creek area near the Snake River, or Beattes Butte unit let me know. I have these places down fairly well and would be happy to help you out.

Re: Little help in Corvallis
Bird, If you are after grouse, get on the logging roads between Lobster Valley and Yachats, and drive until you either find a fresh sprout of Shaggy Manes or huckleberries. This will draw in the Fool Hens, and don't forget to eat the berries and mushrooms too. The shrooms won't usually sprout til we get some decent rain. Let me know if you need more detail.

Re: Little help in Corvallis
Snapset,
Thanks for the tip. If you wouldn't mind filling me in w/ a little more detail that would be appreciated. Don't give me any of your honey holes, just a general idea. Feel free to e-mail me at bjm427@hotmail.com if you don't want to post on the board too.
Looks to me like you just get off 34 onto 5 Rivers Rd. and just drive around. Also, mostly ruffs or some blues? Thank you very much for the help.

Re: Little help in Corvallis
Hey Ayefsh,
Heard about Chesnimus. That sucks! I'll give you a call later on. No luck at Seaside? Ah well. Heard about your grouse from the Mrs. Too funny. Thanks for the invite. May take you up on it.

Re: Little help in Corvallis
Ill second mary's peak for deer. I like to hunt near the top as you drive up the main road down the left side. If you get a map you can see how to get to the road that goes below, and if you kill one you can drag it down to the lower road. Are you a student or professor?

Panther creek, Deadwood creek, and west of there on 3250, all the way to border of the Cummins Creek Wilderness (Great elk hunting).
Good Luck
