Need a chocolate lab pup... Please? :)
I am looking for a nice dog. Could be a pup, could be a dog someone bought and didn't turn out.
Has to be little enough, not 100 lbs of lab.
Doesn't have to be pure.
Has to love me.
???

Two sources for Choc labs. I believe both currently know of pups.
Maxine Fulks: Coyote Cr Kennels in Eugene
Marilyn Parker: Sauvie Is Kennels Portland

Re: Need a chocolate lab pup... Please? :)
I just can't spend 500 bucks on a pup.
I can't afford it.
Seems like there would be some resource for pups that aren't wanted... Not purebread, or just the runt of the litter?
I could possibly spend 200, (If you don't tell Bill!)
If anyone knows, I know it is a long shot, and I should use the class ads. I'll do that!

Re: Need a chocolate lab pup... Please? :)
I will have some pups in a year or so. Jenna is .75 lab, .25 golden retreiver. She looks like a 100% black lab, and I have gotten nothing but compliments on her when I take her anywhere, even by folks who have purebreds. She will be bred with a yellow lab that belongs to a friend of mine, but not for a while. If you can wait that long, you can have one for free, cause you set up this COOL hunting BB.

Maybe the clas ads are the best way to find the dog you are looking for. Most Choc. Labs will not sell for 2 hundred bucks but you may also be able to find a field trial or hunt test flunkie that would be exactly what you are looking for. These dogs are already well trained but just didn't cut the mustard because they couldn,t mark or take a line to a bird. Things that don't make a differance to you. It sounds like you are just looking for a great family pet not a hunting dog.(better consult Bill) He may have other ideas. Like maybe a combo dog pet and hunt. What ever you get make sure that the dog is well trained and taken care of. Including lots of time with the dog. I know this would be easy for you but I just don't like seeing pets that are neglected and not trained. Hope you get a good one. I recommed very highly Doug Shade at Minoggie Kennels 503-621-3597 If you would like to see any of his dogs come and see mine who by the way is named Rauly or I can send you to any number of other owners of his pups.

Re: Need a chocolate lab pup... Please? :)
I trained dogs in 4H as a kid, I need one that I can spend hours with in the field training.
(Also need a good book about how for hunting... any help?)
I do need a good hunting dog and I am willing and excited about doing the training. I love it as much as the dog. So a flunkie just wouldn't do.
Sounds like I need to spend a bunch of money on one... Now let's see... Do I need a dog or a car?

The Multnoma(sp) Humain Society has a listing of available dogs on thier website in the Portland shelter. I was looking for a Border Collie for my son and have seen several lab puppies, some even pure bred available for adoption. I think the fee is less than $50.00 .

Marilyn Parker who is associated with Sauvie Island kennels ( I don't have her number but the kennel may)may have what you want. She isn't selling pups, but knows specifically about chocolates, chocolate breedings, and dogs who may be in need of a home. She is a real neat lady. I should have more clear earlier.

Re: Need a chocolate lab pup... Please? :)
Actually Tilla Marilyn has a girl that she just bred in the last couple of days. Not sure who the owner of the girl is. She does bred some fantastic dogs. Now if she would just give up those chocolates and start breeding some nice blacks she would have the perfect kennel.
Marilyn Parkers Kennel name is Sterling Kennels and she has been raising chocolates for many years. Probobly the best breeder in this area when it comes to quality in both the field and the show ring she strives for perfection.

Danny, she is also the neatest gal. Also, I will be absolutely be color neutral I'm pretty sure she might know of a dog that needs a home. There are a few others like Margie Douma and others involved in retriever rescue work. The chocolate specification makes it tough though.

Re: Need a chocolate lab pup... Please? :)
One of the gals that comes in the store rescues dogs. She even brought this lab back from Oregon....go figure. Well its a friendly dog...and pregnant. So you get as many pups as you want to go with the deal. Think she said it was a golden...can't remember now. Jen did you get a doggie?

Re: Need a chocolate lab pup... Please? :)
Jen;
I have a line on a good litter of blacks that will be ready Thanksgiving. Good papers from good hunting stock. The bit...mom is a $1000 dog.
Let me know if you are interested. I know the breeder is more intersted in good homes than money.

Re: Need a chocolate lab pup... Please? :)
Geez you guys. Am I the only one getting the message here other than Marty and Norm?
Jen I rescued my yellow from the gas chamber when she was two or three. We seriously had to have a couple of "Come to Jesus" meetings but when it all came out, I own one of the best dogs I ever had. She can't get close to a field trial. She retrieves when it suits her unless it is a tennis ball or a stuffed animal and then she will wear you out. She has facial expressions that you can understand what she is saying. When she wants to get close you can't get a sheet of paper between us.
She has been a pony ride for kids when she was younger and a good foot warmer when it gets cold. She sits in a jump seat when she goes for a ride in the truck and cleans up the kitchen floor when there is a spill.
I got her in hopes she would retrieve waterfowl. She finally decided to the 2nd season I owned her. She doesn't accept hand signals well, but she will swim her heart out chasing down a cripple (I've almost lost sight of her in the Columbia trying to call her back). If the bird happens to hit terra firma she will hold the bird until you walk your happy rear end down there and pick it up yourself.
She'll never win a medal but she definitely won my heart.

Re: Need a chocolate lab pup... Please? :)
And if you want to avoid the "Come to Jesus" meetings along with a host of other problems phisical as well as mental then get the best pup you can and start training the day it comes home with you.
I have nothing against saving someone else's problem pup but there is no garantee that you will end up with a good companion.
A bunch of dogs end up at a shelter for a reason. If that reason is that the dog was not properly socialized as a young puppy then no amount of training will fix the situation. The dog may bite for no apparent reason or constantly run away or respond with aggression to the sight of a broom or a newspaper or who-knows-what until you stumble upon it.
I salute you for being willing to take a big chance on a strangers dog. Jen, do yourself a favor and start with a clean slate and a good book. (Wolters for the first 20 weeks, Spencer for everything else).
No offense intended. I know you are just trying to salvage some innocent canine.
Peace to all dog lovers.
