The utilities are beating salmon to death!
From NSIA:
Most of you know that Governor Kulongoski has firmly stood up for salmon, and been in court on the side of the fishing industry, the Tribes and the conservation community.
The utility lobbyists are working hard to get the state of Oregon OUT of the lawsuit. They are pounding the Governor from DC and in Salem to pressure him to substantially weaken Oregon's position. They criticized the Governor at a press conference in Salem yesterday. Once again the utility companies make ridiculous claims that salmon will bankrupt our state, but if there was a utility increase it would actually amount to pennies per month in our household electric bills.
NSIA is on the lawsuit because we believe that the federal government must be legitimate part of the recovery process, instead of constantly redefining the problem to protect the status quo. Here in Oregon, we must fight the extreme federal positions when they try to tell us that 1) Dams are a part of the natural landscape 2) A hatchery fish is the same as a wild fish and 3) Fish don't need 90% of their critical habitat any more.
We appear in front of a Judge this week. The salmon need Oregon, salmon need us, they need the tribes, commercials, conservationists and most of all SALMON NEED YOU!
It will take all of us together to keep water flowing for salmon.
2005 is the year that we have to say enough is enough. If we don't, 4 and 5 years from now our salmon runs will be back in trouble. With them will be our jobs and state agency budgets that depend on fishing license sales.
Please write a short e-mail right now to Governor Kulongoski, care of Mike Carrier, michael.carrier@state.or.us and let him know how much the salmon need the State of Oregon's help in the lawsuit. No one will remember or care that we have brown lawns or we could not wash our cars, but salmon runs will be devated for years if we don't help them, as will the sportfishing industry. Send your note to michael.carrier@state.or.us or use the Governor's e-mail form at http://governor.oregon.gov/Gov/contact_us.shtml
Tell the Governor to stay the course and ensure that salmon protections are in place this year, as we all work together to preserve an important economic engine of this state: Salmon and Steelhead fisheries.

Dear Governor Kulongoski,
Please continue the good work you have begun, implementing the OR salmon recovery plan. This crazy low water year is going to be hard on many, but hardest on our anadramous fish stocks. The utility companies can and will make more money some other time, but if our fish runs are ruined by short-sighted greed, from DC and elsewhere, then OR will feel the pain for a long time.
W and cronies have proven that they do not care about fish, state's rights or small business. You can stand up for these things that mean so much to Oregonians by staying the course on the OR salmon recovery plan.
I am a registered voter and tax payer.
Thank you
Stephen Blum
Thanks Pete.

Re: The utilities are beating salmon to death!
Pete,
I noticed that the link to the web address had an extra bracket at the end of the address. It was the " ) " that is located above the zero on the keyboard. I deleted it and my email went through.

Thanks for the heads-up, Pete.
My message:
"The state of Oregon has a remarkable history of being “early” in realizing that access to coastlines, recycling/litter minimization, sensible land use planning, mass transit, pollution control, and preservation of our historical natural resources are crucial to our state’s current and future livability.
Pictures of extinct wild salmon won’t suffice. Nobody is competing to be the next Burbank.
Please help to ensure that short-term profits don’t preclude the very things which make this a wonderful place to live. Keep Oregon’s independent spirit in the fight and don’t capitulate to the profiteers.

Re: The utilities are beating salmon to death!
"The utilities" are a pretty nebulous entity - any more specific information?
I'm paying extra to PGE for groovy power ["Healthy Habitat"] and a donation to salmon recovery efforts. If they're working in the background to ignore the fish, that might disturb me.
