Re: Leather boots
Robert,
Back in the days when I worked in the woods, I only wore all leather boots. The boot of choice was made by West Coast boots out of Scappoose (or St Helens, dont remember which town they were in, they are only 7 miles apart). I even went in and had them make a plastic foot the same size as mine so I could order boots made to fit exactly.
I never liked any of the mink oils because they made the leather to soft in my opinion and the boots didnt hold up very well. I didnt mind using Snow Seal, but my favorite was Hublers Shoe Grease. I would put it on the stove and melt it into a liquid on a low heat. Then apply it to the leather, where it would soak in and turn back into a solid. Kept my feet the dryest the longest.
One of the guys on the crew would slap a little 10-40 on his boots every few days and swore by it His socks would be all black and I could never believe the petroleum products were good for the boot.
Now days, I dont treat the leather, I just buy Danners with a goretex lining and dont worry about my feet getting wet.
