Re: first pic post, modified Kwikfish
When fishing singles on a Kwik, I too agree that the belly hook should point away from the belly rather than toward it. If you "troll" a single hook mounted to a swivel or a bead chain in a swimming pool ( my test chamber!) the bend of the hook (the heaviest part) will naturally tend to ride at the bottom with the hook point up. That is the wrong attitude for the belly hook on a Kwikfish, as the hook point has ZERO exposure in that position... it's almost like having no hook at all!
The best way to force the hook point down is to rig the hook with two stout split rings. This will ensure the hook point stays maximally exposed, but still gives the hook some freedom of movement during the fight so the fish can't exert as much leverage against the hook. The double split rings will never duplicate the complete freedom of rotation you can achieve with a barrel swivel, but in my way of thinking, it's more important to hook the fish first. The leverage issue during the fight is a secondary concern.
