Default Newport South Jetty

Went out camping at newport last weekeng and seen some guys out fishin on the south jetty at the mouth of Yaquina Bay. Walked out to the end of the jetty and asked a bunch of guys on the way what they were fishing for.Got a bunch of "first time fishing here", "whatevers biting"and a couple of no replies.Did I stumble on a major zipper lip location or just a bunch of unfriendlies .If anyone knows what they fish for on that jetty, and how to fish for'em that would be SWEET.

Mostly greenling in close to the rocks during the day, seabass anywhere at night. Better fishing by far in daylight is on the north jetty just ocean side of the large "hump" you can see about 3/4 ways out. Long walk but worth it. No, the south jetty is not a zipper and I've found is generally slow most of the time.

Its not a zipperlip spot, I Dont think it is anybodys chioce destination, usually people who are at the beach anyways and want to try it, or for me its just something to do when the salmon and steelhead fishin is slow. I have fished the jetty quite a bit, and have never caught a bucket full or anything, usually a cauple greenling, and a seabass sometimes. As far as "whatever bites" for a reply, they probably werent jerken your chain, when your jetty fishin, you can catch a dozen different kinds of fish with the same bait. I have tried boiler bay(north of newport about 12 miles) a few times and seem to do better there when the surf isnt to big. Weekend before last, I pulled into boiler bay to see if any body was catching, ( i wasnt fishing) and there was an Asain family that I watched catch 3 good sized seabass and a cabizon in about 30 min using sandshrimp and clam necks with really long surf rods.
Hope this helps.

I've not fished the jetties much at Newport, but have fished most of them further south. This time of year there could be greenlings, sea trout, cabazon, flounders, you name it. If the lings are in a good way to fish for them is with a slip bobber (a big one) and a whole herring (any color will work). Usually dont need any weight, just let the herring or sardine float to the bottom naturally. You need pretty heavy tackle for lings in the rocks. They will head straight down and wedge themselves in. You need to be able to get them up quickly. I usually use a salmon outfit since you don't need to cast out very far. It's a real hoot! And there is no better tasting inshore bottom fish in my opinion, than a ling of any color. Just writing this made me realize it's time for some jetty fishing. If thats slow than maybe some surf pearch fishing will do the trick.
