Re: Archery Season Reports ?
Didn't get out this weekend to do any actual hunting (saving that for next week when our much-awaited 10 day hunt in the Eagle Caps begins) as I had to do one more camping trip with the girlfriend before hunting season starts (which combined with OSU football and fall salmon will keep me completely occupied until Dec 1). Went to the Steens area and it seemed as if most people from Burns to Crane to Frenchglen were having pretty good success on Antelope, including a couple that would probably go book. I did find one for myself while driving around that would definitely be a keeper for next year (if I can draw a tag). Also ran into a nice herd of elk in a way out of the way desert canyon, six cows and a nice branch bull ("Let's go already, how long do you really need to look at those elk?"). May have to go back if the Eagle Caps don't pan out. Will report later on how that goes. Anyone else hunting up there?

Re: Archery Season Reports ?
I ruined my 11 year old son. We got on a nice 5x bull first light, but he didn't want to come in close enough to play. He still had some velvet spots left, but was mostly clean. I won't push him to much so he'll stick around. Fifteen minutes after giving up on the bull, I'm on a nice bear 250+. I was within 25YDS at times, but no shot . I need a taller bear or shorter brush. We Saw several does on the way back to the truck. Now my son will expect the same action every time out . No take downs, but It was still a kick.

Re: Archery Season Reports ?
Cool. I missed the origin of this one. What happened?
50 yards on a cow was the best I could during last week end near Saddle Mt. One fun thing was picking Chanterales. They are out. And you should have seen our power knap. One buddy made a gravel bed and the rest were curled up in the grassy ditch. I never had a better knap. Upon waking I said proudly, "that is a Roman bed." I now know how the elk know when to go to sleep. The mountains make you so tired and every one spontaniously sites down after eating and goes to sleep. With out a word. It was cool
I will be heading to Ukia Thursday eve. Till Monday. I know where the bull of the woods lives but don't expect any encounters of the 3rd kind with Growler Bull till the last week of the hunt when things really heat up.

Re: Archery Season Reports ?
I spend the weekend following my hunting partner around chasing elk. He got an out of state bow tag for Washington this year. I could not believe all the bulls we saw. I spotted and called for him.
We got within 50 yards of several bulls. Cows and other hunters kept screwing up the hunts.
He was 40 yards from the best set up I have ever seen. 5 point bull laying facing away behind a log. A 15 - 20 mph wind from the bull to the hunter. Cows had all fed off over the ridge about 50 yards away from the bull, feeding away from the hunter. All my buddy could only see horns over the log in front of him. My parner spent 3 hours getting into position and was almost to where he was gonna chirp and get the bull to stand, when some meat hunter sneaks up and takes a long 50 yard shot at one of the cows and misses. Cow runs right over the top of the bull, taking the bull with her, over the next ridge. I am very confident my buddy would have had no problem getting to within 20 yards and taking the finest bull he has ever killed, if the other guy didnt show up out of nowhere. He didnt even know a bull was in the area.
Very flustrating, having people screw up what you got going on, but that is the down side of hunting public land and with excess hunters.
We still had a great time, and my buddy has the week off to hunt more. After getting the hunting juices flowing, I am ready to hang up the pole for a while.

Re: Archery Season Reports ?
Maybe Bait should have brought his boat so he could have his buddy put a stick through the motor. Would be a great addition to the wad of rope still wound in the pump.

Re: Archery Season Reports ?
Hey wetdogbreathe, I took out the ball of rope a couple nights ago. I was surprised to find it all melted together from the pump spinning on it. It was a little bigger than a grapefruit. I hope the motor is not damaged.
Bigshark - Packing is as much fun as hunting, isnt it?? I wish there was a way to make a living as a professional meat packer.

Re: Archery Season Reports ?
Missed two 20 yd opportunities within seconds on cows due to overhanging branch above my treestand. Couldn't get my bow limb to clear. I thought the location would be fine as my buddy had used it for 3 years and got two animals, he never had them coming from the right. The second morning a spike buck, 10 yds away. I drew easily but as the animal neared my bow limbs passed to the inside of the climbing stand. As I let go the limb hit the stand and sent the arrow 8 ft in front of the deer. The third morning I went on the ground somewhere else and a cow grazed under the stand I abandoned. I just love bowhunting.
