Default Looking for duck/goose lease

I have been searching high and low, tons of phone calls and driven many a mile to find a duck/goose lease. Oregon or Washington doesn't matter. I long to escape the skyblasters and O dark-thirty deal to get a spot. I'll share, split or whatever. Being a ethical hunter, meaning get em in close and let em work, I have left early so many mornings when the guys near by start blastin away when the birds are way out of range. I can't stand em, I just leave.
Help if you can

Kaus,
Been some in the Oregonian lately under Sporting Goods.I'm sure these are spendy.Somewhat late to find anything thats inexpensive.Start putting the word out in March and by next year you should be able to find one thats affordable.Thats probably not what you wanted to hear but anything now is not going to be cheap. Good Luck !

I don't get the newspaper, any idea of what day it was in there.
I've put ads around and have had no luck. Seems to be a word of mouth kinda thing.
So this is my next option.
Still looking

Kaus,
Try 503-621-9813 or 503-539-5396. These are both lakes on Sauvie.

If your not getting the paper and want to check out the classifieds go to www.oregonlive.com This has many of the ads that are run in the newspaper.

Andersons is back handling business on his own on the island. Also, Connie Wheeler may have something on the island,. I suspect $1200-1500. Not sure.

Jon Love is a berry farmer in western wasington co. He has some ponds with blinds, and an old camper for changing clothes and making coffee. Last I heard he wanted $600 a season?? I've been by but not hunted it. I don't have his number but it's probly in the book under forrest grove. He is out of forrest grove on thatcher rd. look for a big white barn on your left with about 50 deer and elk racks nailed to the side.

good luck

Kaus

Anderson still had an opening last month.
It is a newer club, only four or five seasons. His planting is as good as it gets.
The hunters are first rate guys who likem in close. He got $1650 last year. A lot but not as much as some who don't have near the shooting. His # is 503-621-3327....If they are on vacation call Andy Huck at 360-254-2899....He can tell you where they are in membership. The addition of the second lake this year will give them a much larger show of water.

Had another thought for you. The Egger place on the west side of the Island will have new folks on it. Bay News gave it up and Ron Spada took the lease.....Should be less money....but I don't know anybody that hunted it last year.If you want me to try and get you a number to call let me know.

I'm in about the same boat as Kaus. I'm out of Lake Oswego and will likely only hunt on weekends. I think it was Ron who told me $1800 on the new area. That's a bit steep for me as I wont be out there all that often and, quite frankly, can only eat a few ducks a week anyway Any information on other opportunities greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

More on this...

I just called Josh Anyart (one of the numbers above - 503 621 9813). He said he's got a lake set up and he's looking for 6 or 8 guys to lease it for around $8,000 total. At this point he says he has two or three guys (I'd be #4, I guess) interested.

He sounds like a nice guy and said if I wanted to go out just a few times here and their he could set me up as well.

I think this weekend I'm going to go check his area out and he mentioned a bit of a dove shoot while we're at it.

Sounds pretty good!

Kaus
The number for Jerry Egger is 503-621-3768
but all I get is the answering machine. He could give you the number for Ron Spada...If
Nevada is talking about the same lake they must be dropping the number of hunters. I have not shot at the Eggar place in years but my opnion is it would never hold a candle to the Andersen Black Angus Ranch. I shot it a few times last year and it was as good as any lake on the Island. Granted last year was a below average year for ducks as the geese have become far too big a percentage of the waterfowl population. In addition we had a heck of a time with the weather. I hunted the island almost everyday
last season and we could't get wind to blow them off of Sturgeon, no cold spells at all, and bird count never came up to normal. Kaus,
I don't want to talk you out of anything but
duckhunting in the metro area is a spendy situation...probably not worth it for most
fellas. But, for some it is a passion and it
is only a few minutes from home. The size of the metro area has exploded over the past decade. This is a lousy formula for keeping prices reasonable. To pay big bucks up front for a place you haven't hunted is taking a big chance. You might want to consider asking to have a "look" at the various places during the season. It's just a thought and I hope you take it as its intended. I hate like hell to see anybody get burned. You can travel to guided hunts that are sure things and there is free hunting not too far away thats ok if you have a boat and decoys. If you don't find a place before the season, I am willing to get you a "look" with those who have openings that I hear about during the season....You too Nevada if you would like to give it a try.

I talked with Anderson the other day he is full. Greg Seethauller (sp?)is no longer running it for him.
I still wonder if Connie Wheeler has openings. The had a bunch of birds workin the place last year and no one pressuring them. Another idea is Jacobsen's not a hot hot club but I think it may be under $1000.

Very good advise Bigshark, I know of a fellow that spent $1K on a goose lease and only got one bird all season. I sure don't want that to happen. Could I take you up on a look after the season opens? I would love to get good advise before spending this kind of money. Sounds like you have a good bit of knowledge of the lakes on the island.
Could we talk on the phone and maybe set some plans?
I do have a boat and dekes, could you tell me more about that area also.

Yes, Wheeler's is at the south end of the island past the Pumpkin Patch. It is known to most folks as the Hall ranch. His wife was a Hall and was one of the early families on the island. They no longer live at the place but I will e-mail you their home phone and the number for the ranch as well. I don't know who lives on the ranch now or if they are the ones to talk to about hunting. Let me know if I goof the e-mail up again...Sorry

I just heard that Connie had no one come back from last year That's bothersome, he is a special character. The guys from the year before last had a pretty good time, it seemed under hunted last year. He has got about 1500 acres but is real particular about walking around on it. There is another guy I know who bought a small parcel, his name is John Kramer. he lives in NW Portland.

By the way Big Shark what club is between Wheelers and the river on the other side of that long Pine row? They seem to do alot of shooting and sometimes put up a sign looking for members. The birds sure spend alot of time over there.

Are you talking about the right side of the road, north of the nursery stock just past the pink house?

I think the place your talking about is the Trappold Farm. It is a big veggie truck farm operation. I don't know anything about it or anyone who has shot it. I noticed a new house
going up by the road....It might not be one big place anymore....The crops at the south end of the island this year sure look like they will pull a lot of birds this season. The evening flight coming of Smith Lake across the river may get sucked into these fields....The guys at this end of the island are sure due for a great season...I hope they get it.

Big Shark, that pink house is the adobe looking one with the nursery stock around it ,then thats the one. The have a sign up along the road around this time of year. They pull alot of geese in there. I don't see all the corn in there this year though. But they are big enough to pull quite a few birds off the Columbia. When we disturb the geese they go there for awhile before the come back. Talk about crops, our farmer is putting in 250 acres of young...tender...juicy..winter wheat!!

I'd be very interested in talking to someone that is "in the know". Time is ticking away and I'm starting to get panicked... err... duck fevered or something.

My email is fauste@bigfoot.com Send an email with a number and I'd be happy to call/chat/email/fetch your ducks for you...

Great advice! I'm not adverse to paying something... but the big bucks would be a waste... and my wife wouldn't like that too much
