Default China Chronicles: Fish!!!

Ok, now I haven't been this excited about seeing a fish in the water in a long time. maybe when i was 10 and saw a 4# largemouth bass beyond my flyrod casting distance. i dropped my flyrod and ran to the house for spinning rig and a rooster tail...wham O

Well we ventured to an area in my neighborhood, locked community of course here in China, and I found a larger stream/river than we have running throughout the neighborhood. And the same old Koi show up,, 1 pounders maybe, look fun, but then I saw it... Grass Carp on the prowl. I look and they are about 3# or so... then in the deep I can see bigger ones. After about 20 minutes of slobbering on the bridge I got to see some 5-8# carp cruise by. I don't yet have my fishing gear though, and my next trip home (next week) has been cancelled. I guess I will have to take the kids snoopy rod down and see what i can do with it

I am still bugged about those fish swimming around without a predator... the locals can't come in and fish for them, and so they ARE ALL MINE, MINE, MINE.

My plans is to get a fly rod and throw some wooly boogers at the carp.

BTW: take at look at my neighborhood, there are some good pics on this URL.

Hope you check with the locals or authorities first. Do others fish it? It wouldn't be good to have an extended stay.

I was reading thru some of the fine print on the linked site, and saw where fishing was legal in your neighborhood. I was surprised to see you have to be naked and hop on one foot while casting.

Some foreign countries have what seems like funny rules and rituals, but that is only because we dont understand them. Please dont post any pictures of you holding a bass in your required fishing attire.

Your home trip was cancelled I was so looking forward to the real fortune cookies :depressed:

Me again

Cool man!
White Amur (common grass carp) are much harder to bring to a fly. They are much more in tuned with eating...well, grass & moss than the common carp which is omnivorous.

-Cant wait to hear about your stories!

Ya, sour corn mash for the grass carp. Had great fun fishing for a great variety of gold fishes and kois on hot summer days at the imperial earth temple in Beijing when the kids were little (yes legal). Listening to the local muscians, drinking a good copy of dutch bear at 18 cents a liter with the perfume of lotus flowers in the air. Hmmm, maybe time for another visit.

Moutherwatering!!! , I did one post on this fishery  , and they were using 6M rods... that is 6 meter. I found them at the sports store. Amazing 18+ feet of fishing pole to catch a 4" fish, apparently they were happy and it went on the BBQ that evening

I read about European grass-carp a few months ago, apparently guys chop off some grass from around the lake or pond, and throw it into the water as chum. Then they either use little strips of green plastic, etc. to sight cast to them, or little bundles of grass around a hook to bait-fish.

They use the long poles partly because they can just plop the bait straight onto the fish, partly because the baits don't weigh anything.
Cheers,
L

Bobo's right. Alittle grass chum, then use the long pole to put corn meal on the bottom, then a little sour corn meal dough on the hook. Be sure to have them fried so they are still alive at the head when served
