Poacher sited/caught!! updated! 1-19-04
Headed out at o'dark thirty to fish river X for Steel this a.m. and was astonished to get to the first hole all alone at 7:15
By 8:30 I was now fishing with 9 other anglers in a 60 foot stretch of water, with varying technics from bobber bait, bobber jigs, and drifting bait.
3 of the guys who were the last to show tossed out of rythem, and made several comments about how others were ruining there fishing and they had driven 4 hrs from Puyallup to be there 1 of them hooks into a chrome pig hen of 20lbs. It takes him into and through the tailout after multiple displays of acrobatics and 15 mins later he comes back with it proudly displaying it and it is a native !!!!
I tell the poacher and his buddy who is now snapping pics that this is a NON NATIVE RETENTION FISHERY!! his reply is no it isn't, YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOUR TALkING ABOUT and gives it 4 whacks with an evergreen pillow .
As a few of us discuss this, a collective effort is made to record license # of vehicle, witnesses, and a call to WDFW..Even being a holiday the phone was answered and a reply of I'LL BE RIGHT THERE, was our reward As I was leaving to head home some 25 mins later WDFW was just arriving. I Think a couple of the witnesses are from the local steelheaders club and there are also numerous flyers posted for non native retention only!
Tight lines
EDIT/UPDATE,3:50pm
I was just called with an update on the perp. He was sited $250 and will be required to appear in court.
His defense was he asked several people before bonking the nate and was told he could keep 1 .
Thanks to the 3 other witnesses and myself this dirt bag will be getting his. It was further pointed out to me that the Judge for that Co. has a very good rep for no leanency for poachers !!!

Some more info: the fine was $250 and a court appearance. He may get more, that is one TOUGH county on game violators. Great Job Dan.

Re: Poacher sited/caught!! updated! 1-19-04
The last update I got was that the address on his vehicle registration was no good. The address on his Drivers Liccence was also no good. They were still trying to track him down. That was a couple days ago. If I hear anything else I will post an update.

Re: Poacher sited/caught!! updated! 1-19-04
That was a great job in getting the bad guy. If all of us was to witness and turn in 1-2 of these guys @ our favorite spots wouldn't that be something?
I was fishing @ Drano the fall before last and this guy would hook and drag the spawning salmon in one after another and no one, including myself did anything about it.
This thread has given me huevos to speak out loud to these guys and point out when they are doing the wrong thing. Also the wife bought me a digital camera for our anniversary. Little does she know that it's going fishing with me often.
On the Yakima in Prosser some people think that just because salmon are in the river then it's a free for all. Boy that really chaps my hide. I need one of those anti-snagging T-shirts

Great job Dan, if a few more guys went by this and UG's example the other day maybe this practice would soon be exterminated.

Re: Poacher sited/caught!! updated! 1-19-04
my father was fishing the same area and witnessed the same thing. He said it was great to see this happen. Although we both agreed that the $250 ticket wasn't enough! Maybe his day in court will lead to a little bit more of a fine.

That's great! That is exactly how it should work! Most of those guys do that because they know that there are not enough gameys to catch them. But if the average fisherman will turn your sorry @$$ in, then suddenly nowhere is safe to poach anymore! Great job!!
