OK, I'll try and help. Maui is not the hot fishing island. That being said, I caught the only marlin out of the entire fleet the day I went out in 2001. You would do a lot better researching the surf fishing and bringing some small casting rigs.
It's very expensive, do your research.

Re: Lookign for suggestions for a guided trip in K
zueth -
Doubtful there is a charter in Kihei, as it is not really a port town. I have stayed there, and while it is know as the "dry" part of Maui, and has a nice beach/park, it has no harbor that I can recall.
I went a couple of times out of Lahina, which is the port where pretty much all the charters are located. You would definitely need a car to get there, as the roads are long and slow.
I caught and released blue Marlin on a charter known as the "Absolute", but that was years ago, and I don't know that they are still even there. I'd recommend, if your research finds no sure bets, that you go to Lahina the first afternoon you can after you get there. The charters come in between 2:30 and 4ish, so if you show up between 3 and 3:30, you can get an idea of how the crews are, how satisfied the passengers seem, and which charters are getting fish.
That's what I did anyway, there, on another trip to Honolulu, as well as one in Puerto Rico. If you are going as a share rider by yourself, or maybe with one other, it is a good way to find success and good crews.
Hope that helps...

I have fished off Maui a few times. If you are going to go out on a charter, you will have to go to Lahina.
Try mauifishing .com They list the best bets as far as boats go. I think they even will have info for other types of fishing as well.
The last trip we fished on the Ho'okela.
Capt. Kim is great, and he went to school here in Oregon. Be ready for a long boat ride. You will go out a good hour before you get to the good fishing areas. I would definatley go with the Ho'okela. The crew is top notch.
Have fun!

Re: Lookign for suggestions for a guided trip in Kihei
Zueth,
I too have fishend out of Lahina. I don't recall the name of the charter but we had a double on....2 Mahi Mahi....one was 51lbs and the other in the 40# class....both big# for that fish.
One thing I found intresting was the deck hands sell the fish to the local restaurants. Makes sense I suppose and good $$ for them...I think it was bringing $6-8 a lb so do the math!! I found this out when I remarked how excited I was to EAT MY Mahi Mahi.....they looked at me like...."Um....no way buddy!" After some discussion they ended up giving me a filet of the smaller one which was plenty of fish for the week.
The moral of my long story is if you want to keep and eat some of your fish....you might clear that up before you leave port!
Have fun!!

Good point, Grizz. That is customary that the boat keeps the catch, short of "meal request" filets.
One other thing zueth -
Not only are they long trips, but almost always bumpy. Be aware that the seas are notoriously snotty, and July will be no exception. Tends to be 5 to 8' chop in confused swells. Make sure everyone in your party knows this and is prepared if they are subject to getting green.
Great to get a private party charter!
Good luck!

Dude,
You are in luck. The summer months is the prime fishing season in the Islands. Thats when all the million dollar tourneys are taking place. If you can I highly suggest you fly over to Kona (Big Island, 150 miles south of you) And charter a boat for the day. I have ehard from many capt's when I was there for x-mas break, they all said, if you want fish, be here in June-Sept! Thats when the Granders(1,000lb billfish) are caught.
Best of luck, have a great trip.
I fished maui as well 2 years ago, didnt get into anything.

Re: Lookign for suggestions for a guided trip in K
I had a terribly fun day with Finest Kind Charters on this boat
out of Lahaina
Nice boat, great crew, caught a couple of fish (spring break, not the best time of year), saw way more whales than on the whale-watching boat.
There are a few boats out of Maalaea Harbor, that is closer to Kihei.
Ultra-fresh mahi is some tasty stuff ...
