When I still used mono mainline (all I use now is braid, because of the sensitivity, mending, and durability) I would always test it two different ways: first, I would put the line between the tips of two fingernails, and run as much of it as I could to feel any nicks, and if I felt one, I'd cut above that. Second test was to loosely loop the line around my thumb, and slide it over my thumb, still looped. Oftentimes your thumb will feel things that your fingernails won't.
Likewise, hold your line up to a light, or the sun, and if you see any white spots, it means your line's been stretched or gotten to warm from the sun. Once I got any spool less than 100 yards, I'd replace it, and if nothing else, save the rest for leader.
