Default Tackle Organization

After many discussions with friends and fellow anglers in 2003 about tackle organization systems, I have made some changes that seem to work best for me.

I used to keep soft plastcs in a few plano boxes. I have now changed that to keeping the soft plastics in the orginal bag they come in then stuffing them into gallon zip lock bags. I sort the zip lock bags by size or type of plastic and label them with a sharpie. I keep the zip lock bags in a soft tackle bag.

I still keep other types of baits in plano boxes and stuff them in soft tackle bags. Each plano box gets labeled with a sharpie. Now access to whichever bait I want is more readily available.

One other change. I have added a tupperware containner to throw baits into when I make switches and change overs. When I get back from the fishing trip, I go through the tupperware box and throw away baits no longer usable then resort back into the tackle system those that are usable.

No more hooks in the boat carpet, no more broken plastics laying all over the floor of the boat. No more retrieving small weights from every nook and cranny of the boat.

How about your system?

I like the binders for various worms but with yum dingers or tubes I like to keep them in plano and when the bite is tough I can easily go through colors. Especially smallies. This way it's right on the deck and stays neat. Helps with going from an average bait to one thats getting a better commitment.

After fishing with WANNABE, last fall and seeing how well the yum dingers caught smallies i had to buy one more plano for them .
Hey BUCKETMOUTH i had to go out to my boat to take a quick count of plano!s .I have them all marked with a sharpie to keep them all in order.
I now have 31 PLANO!S holding tackel .

Shalom,

I have 26 even after reducing the soft plastics to zip lock bags.

By the way, congratulations on reaching Steelhead status from your 101st post.

i use a combo of the same things all of my soft plastics are in binders but i keep the most used ones in a some plano's so i don't have to zip & flip. i have found that this works good for me because i have all of my favorites @ hand & can see how the stack up aginst eachother because i always start with 5 of each in a slot. also this saves time when i fish with others because i don't have to sort out what i might need and then re pack it. I have only been fishing for bass for 3 years but i too have lots of stuff & this lets me not go way crazy with new stuff and lets me see what is not working so i can try something new.

I have tried everything over the years. But I keep going back to the Plano boxes. I currently have 24 different boxes, I just grab the ones I think I need and stuff them in to a soft sided tackle bag.

Biggest problem?.....To much tackle.....To little time!

Timely topic in my case. I just built a cabinet with 25 drawers in my garage with the single goal in mind of finally getting my gear organized. Besides re-rigging the boat for different styles or different water, I have always had to re-do the tackle bags. Scattered around the garage I think there are about a dozen tackle boxes. I am emptying each one as I go, tossing the junk, and parking the useful stuff in labeled drawers. I have been using the plano system for many years but only now have decided to organize all my gear so as to stop buying stuff I already have. For sockeye fishing I carry one plano, for bass and walleye I need about 6 and for salmon in the lower river or over the bar I need two plano's. My crappie stuff fits a small plano and of course there's the special situations such as flipping or lily pads. 1 plano each. For me, less has been better. Staying organized in the boat is always a good idea and the less stuff I have to trip over, the better. I am just now gearing up for springer fishing so I may carry a little more stuff than usual until I figure out what works for me and than reduce it down.

I can see now that I don't have nearly enough stuff! I only have nine Plano boxes and a few small boxes for all the tackle I use. What am I missing?
Trouble is, I still can't seem to get it organized just the way I would like it. I can't just store it in the boat since I use both my boats, and I also fish a lot with other club members. How can you tote enough tackle, especially when you are fishing multi-species?
