Default Newport Crabbing 2/22 ( Pics ) (re-edited)

After a few errands had been run, I recieved a call from my friend, Ryan, in portland, and wanted to run over to Newport for some quick crabbing.
...I was definitely down!

He dropped down I-5 to Salem, picked me up, and we headed over to the Bay. We didn't get there until around 6:30 and had all traps in the water by 7.

We have 7 traps/rings between the two of us, so it was non-stop pulling up and for only a quick amount of time....
...We were done crabbing in an hour and a half at 8:30 PM.

However, we found some LARGE red rocks that were larger than Keeper Dungeness, and even an EXTREMELY large dungie! Ryan held it up for one picture...

...But I figured I'd lay a measuring stick next to it to show it's real size since these pics didn't do him justice!

Sorry, all the pictures were taken once I got back home, since I DIDN'T bring my digi with me

Here is the whole bounty...notice how wide this big dungie is compared to a couple others in there...just DWARFS them!

Finally, the two of us Hooligans and our larger prizes...

...All in all, we ended up with 7 dungeness, and 14 Red Rocks... I'll take 21 crabs!....not a bad 1 1/2 hrs crabbing for a night off the docks!!

Just for Clarification,...we didn't have all the traps in at once...We played by the rules.

How do the red rocks taste compared to the dungeoness? I've often wondered but I've never seen anyone keep them.

And I always thought you could only have 3 traps/rings per person...

Hopefully one was a backup As far as meat taste....I've found that the rock crabs taste sweeter to me, but they have to be really big b/c its alot of work to get any meat out of them, and most of it is in their pinchers! Body wise theres not much meat! Still like the texture of the Dungies and they make way better crab cakes!!

He never said all the traps/rings were in the water at the same time. Maybe they had a couple sitting on the dock being baited while the others soaked?

Nice job on the crabs! I think redrocks have a sweater taste then the dungies. They are much harder to crack though!

Red rocks do in fact taste sweeter than dungies. Lived on Puget sound for 20 years before moving down here. I am not exaggerating when I say lived on the sound, fox island. I would say about 98% of the crabs in the back yard were red rock and they are definitely sweeter. Had to run to hoodsport to get dungies and oh yeah spotted shrimp. Damn do I miss it up there.
