Default Dang gillnetters are in already!

Well just when things start to get a little interesting....
Fished out of st helens area today and saw two gill netters setting thier nets right at the mouth of the MC. We trolled aroung for a couple hours but they kinda took the wind outa our sails. Does anyone know what days they are in and out?

Early in, early out. The sooner the better. Their impact is fixed.

They were supposed to do some test netting. Maybe that is what you saw. This news has brought my day down several notches. I know we have a long way to go this season, but it's still repugnant. :depressed:

They are in from 6 am this morning until 6 am tomorrow morning. The compact will meet on Thursday to discuss further seasons. There will be a test gillnet fishery on Sunday the 27th as well.

I think Thumper nailed it. The gillnets will get a fixed amount of the take and that amount has already been determined. The sooner they get their fish, the sooner they are done.

Good call, Jack.

I saw both of those guys this morning too, and watched them both get empty sets. Being that I'm lacking in the luck area I went in early!

I believe they were given two more sturgeon periods. the next may be Thursday. There's a test net period Sunday and then the compact meets Monday (I think) and the first springer period could be Tuesday.

I think early in and early out blows. They say were going to see alot of 5 year fish...they are the early fish. That means as usual the nets get the bulk of the larger fish. How about the nets get in late when we have 60 degree water and you can't buy a bite. Let the nets get the non-biters and leave early the more agressive larger fish to us!

The way this year is shaping up that 60 degree water will be here in April.

I saw on Petes link about this netting, that this was for sturgeon. made me wonder what impact that has on salmon. ie do they net the same way when after sturgeon? do they get a bunch of "incidental" salmon and can they keep those?

I had some guy tell me at the dock that his buddy was a gillnetter and several netters were netting the lower river for sturg and came up with 600 "incidental" springers between several boats... once again this is what I heard so I dont place a lot of stock in it... is there anyone that can post a link to net catch results including those "incedental" catches?

Shane, that sounds like the "limits" of springers the sports were "killing" at Coon Island over the weekend according to my neighbor.

I would not put money on it!
