Default Bering Sea

For all you guys out there on the Willamette Pond today, take a look at Jennies NOAA weather links for the Buoy conditions in the Bearing sea.
50 knot winds, 27 ft swell, freezing spray and snow, yep I wanna be crabbin' now!

That is an average day of crabbing

I worked up there for a little over a year doing various fisheries. I crabbed for three seasons. The worst I saw was about a 40' combined sea and sustained winds around 50 knots. I am not sure of the swell but I was on the largest floating processor during the worst I saw. Our TV room was about 5 stories off of the water. I remember looking out the window and having the poop scared out of me as a wave smacked the window  . I need to find a scanner and post some pics of wall walking too. That gets crazy.

I also fished up there on a 56 footer. The last day of a cod season a storm moved in and pegged the windometer at over 100 knots! Lost 1 guy over the rail but luckily got him back! Needless to say, they didnt pay me enough to go back for a fourth winter!

The smallest I was on was 120' crabber. The largest was 680' floating processor. The big boat never pitched at all. It only rolled. It took awhile to learn the chaotic undulations of the small boat.
