Default Columbia River Smallmouth

I'm heading up to fish the Columbia River out of the TriCities area in a couple of weeks. Anyone have any recommendations for this time of year as far as fishing for Smallies? Is there opportunity for Largemouth this time of year there as well?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated...

Basser, Although I fish the PDX area I think the bass will be where you find them. Shallow in the morning and deeper later in the day, think rocks and tributary mouths. Yamamoto grubs or hula grubs in natural colors, 1/8-1/4 oz. ledheads, rootbeer red flake has been killing them for me in my area. Be sure if you use Yamamoto's to bring PLENTY of them, the tails tear of REAL easy and it's easy to lose one per bite. Some times you can keep fishing Yamies with out the tail and still get bit! I fish plastics 99% of the time so I couldn't begin to help you with crank bait or spinny bait suggestions. I wish I could get up that way someday, I hear that's the best smallie water this side of the rockies.

Good Luck

I'm kind of a cheap skate, so most of the time I'm using the single tail 5", you get more in the package than with the hula twin tails.

Basser,

I listened to a Pro at the sportsman show who won the TriCities tournament (forgot his name maybe Borger or something, a local). He said for big SM short and fat rubber. Also he has done a lot of underwater observation with a camera and he can not believe how many BIG fish there are in the Columbia.
Another tip that he stated and works for me is SM don’t move far, reference to it like a house. One day there in the family room next there in the bedroom. So find them in one spot and they will be there close by day to day.

Basser,

Like SMJ says, short big diameter tubes/grubs/reepers not long 5"ers or worms.

Did I miss something
