Default Lake Roosevelt

Our family is headed to Lake Roosevelt for vacation next week. Staying at Spring Canyon down by the dam. Anyone have any fishing experience they want to share on this area? Last year I stopped at the ramp and one boat had some nice 5 pound kokanee that looked like ocean coho. They were caught on downriggers. How about walleye?

Fish Mojo,

I'm not an expert on Walleye but we always seem to catch some. Look for water anywhere from 16 to 24 feet and pull worm harnesses behind a bottom bouncer. I've always had luck with firetiger, but last month we were catching them on a silver blade. We even seem to catch as many walleye as trout when trout fishing. Anytime we got close to shore it seemed like we picked them up. Good luck, and remember the sun screen!

You won't have any trouble catching fish right now. If you don't mind rainbows they are everywhere right now. The Kokes a little harder to find and not as numerous. Fish shallower for the eyes. If you have downriggers start at 30-40 ft down for the kokes as well as the rainbows trolling the usual shiny stuff. Walleye will suspend at times so don't be surprised if you catch them trolling as well. If no downriggers just use a cigar weight 2-4 oz to get you down. If and when you mark fish deeper 60 ft plus drop down further. We caught 15 rainbows in about 45 minutes last weekend up in the Basin.

Thanks for the feedback, guys. I'm really stoked for this trip. Nuttin' better than going to 1 site for an extended time and fishing it whenever you please. Got to do the water ski stuff for the kids, too. I have a new downrigger I'll be tryin out for the first time, so I'll be fishin kokes and walleyes. I'll post you a report when I get back.
