Default Owyhee Reservoir

Never been there. Thinking about going. Any help is appreciated.

Whats the fishing like? What fish are there? I assume catfish and bass. Not sure if I’ll drag the boat or not.

Any comments on the campgrounds. We’ll be in a tent. It looks to be first come first served. I’m figuring if we go, I’ll be at there around 10am or earlier on Thursday the 31st of this month.

Thanks.

Hey Nate! The road up there is pretty narrow and twisty. But there are some deffinate advantages to having a boat up there. I caught a bunch of Crappie up there and one small bass, but haven`t really spent that much time up there. There are some camp grounds if I remember correctly, but watch out! That thar is real snake country! I never was up there in the summer without spotting at least a couple diamond backs. You might consider fishing the river below the dam, I`ve gotten some real nice rainbows outta there in the past, and saw a huge brown that a friend caught with my pole, the brown probably would have gone at least 7 lb! If you can compare them with steelhead. Couldn`t keep browns there though when I was there last. About 5 years ago. Pretty but very rugged country up there. Good luck and tight lines. Later,Fishft.

It's a long drive over but a nice place to visit. The State park is just past the dam when you drive in. Nice park but small, not sure how many spots available. A boat would be most helpful since the lake is 44 miles long. Lots and lots of shoreline. Bass, crappie and catfish are the primary species. Some nice trout near the dam I'm told. Very primitive conditions once you get away from the State park area. Hot and dry with very little if any shade available. All methods will work for fish. Take some worms, they always work. The lodge used to be just past the State park but the last time I was there it was going out of business so I don't know what the status is. Take plenty of fuel with you. No gas close. Good luck.

Waterdog. Hey from the same area! Great! I`ve only been around this area for about 4 yrs. Was raised up on the N. Santiam, sure miss it. Good part is that there is lots of water around here also, so am still learning my way around to the fishing holes. I noticed the profusion of boats in this area and now see the reason for so many. Always was a bank fisherman till I moved here. Now am considering a small one for myself. Looking forward to the Owyhee report. I was a corrections officer over there in the Snake river facility for a couple yrs. Don`t miss that. Welp, good luck mon! Later, Fishft.

I have just returned from the Owyhee Resevoir and the news is not good. The water level in the Resevoir is extremly low. They have had a dry winter and no snow run off. So the Launching site is long ways from the water.

Waterdog, under the circumstances, if it were me, I'd probably concentrate on nearby Brownlee Reservoir. More options for camping and from recent reports it seems like more activity on Brownlee as well, and downstream Oxbow Reservoir is good bet.

Good luck.

Fishing at Owyhee has been really slow for crappie, but if you catch any fish, they are pretty big. There are a few largemouth being caught, Recently a 9 pounder was landed. Again, few and far between. Water is really low, and most of the cover has been left on a beach several months ago. I'd take Dean's advise, and hit Brownlee or Oxbow.
