Default Cortand Clear 555-- Stiff as 20# Mono??

I added a spool of the (newer?) Corland clear floating line for fishing still waters. I tried it out last week and it came off the reel coiled like 20# mono  Granted, it was 40 degrees at the time. Will this line ever be limp like regular fly line so it will be nice and straight or did I make a bad purchase???? I also picked up Sci Anglers Wet Cell Intermediate in clear Is it also going to have the same problem?

Unfortunately both lines will likely coil in cold weather. Maybe one less than the other? To get the clear line, they ussually need to use a mono core. Hence the coiling like mono. The airflo lines have mono cores and coil like crazy on me, but with temps above 50 they are my favorite.

Alot of fly lines behave that way in the cold...40 degrees outside, what was the water?

I wouldnt be too concerned, I like to use the clear camo in lakes, but i know alot of people who swear by the stuff for rivers.

no, not a bad purchase.

I haven't used the 555 myself, but the two other fishermen I know who bought it brought it back to the fly shop they got it from and got their money back. Sounds like even in warmer weather, the line might not behave so nicely. I hope that's not the case though for you.

I had that 555 Cortland line and it's by far the worst as far as retaining coils. You literally have to pre-stretch it before fishing

I have some of that line too, and like Stew indicates its not just the cold temp. You need to pre-stretch it before casting. But on the bright side, I've made numerous casts over very wary fish (Flat Creek, WY) and it didn't spook the fish. Because of the coil issue, I only break it out when I'm fishing high traffic spring creeks.

I use the Wulff Tri Taper intermediate line. Love it.

Same goes for the cortland ghost tip. Junk, even in warm weather.
