Stan,
I lived in Mich. for a bit and we used the same thing only we called them spoons the ones that worked the best up there were daredevils red/wht and plain silver or bronze and the Pike loved them more than the bass. I also have one of your trading cards you autographed at one of the sportsman shows for my son when he was just about 1yr old he is now almost 4 and still has it on his dresser and has bagged a ton of fish since then. Could it be the card...

Dear Airborne:

I used a variety of wobblers, but none were as successful for me at the ones tney called "NEBCO."
As I recall, that name stood for "National Expert Bait Company.

I'm glad your little guy still has that card. I hope you'll bring him to the outdoor show in Eugene next February. I'll find something else for him.

I like your reference to the infantry. I didn't serve with airborne infantry, but I spent two years in an infantry rifle company in the jungles of the South Pacific during World War 11. My
outfit was Company G, 167th Infantry Regiment of the 31st Dixie Division.

All the best.

Great article Stan. I had forgotten the Red & White Dardyvels or wobblers. I first learned about them from my grandmother on Fort Peck Res. in Eastern Montana. No bass then but lots of Walleyes and that really caught them. I brought them back and used them on the upper Willamette above Oregon City. Caught bass on them and liked them but over the years, they got pushed back in the tackle box with new stuff filling the front trays.

I think I might email an aunt back there and see if they can get me a few.

Have you checked out those polymer clay wobblers yet?

Good fishing.

Dear Hawgcatcher:

Glad you found the wobbler series of interest. Like you, I've used Daredevles and I know they are a great pike lure. For some reason I've never done worth a toot with them for largemouth.

Keep your eye peeled for some old NEBCO wobblers. I know darn well some of the long time steelheaders will have some poked away someplace. When you find them, do try to get those that have a copper finish inside. I have no idea why, but it's the only one of the bunch I ever did well with consistently.

All the best to you, pardner.

Mr. Fagerstrom, I used to use them in Oxbow Res. on the Snake River for smallmouth and also at Owyhee Res. for largemouth and have done quite well with them. As the years went by they have been replaced with plastics, both hard and soft. Thanks for reminding me. I going to dig them out and at least take them for a ride. Enjoyed your articles.....sal

Dear Sal:

I do the same thing. We get so darn excited about the new stuff we forget to keep throwing some of the old standbys. It's sort of like forgetting an old friend.

As I pointed out in my story, wobblers don't work everywhere for bass and they aren't anywhere near as dependable day in and day out as say a spinnerbait or a plastic worm. But there are times, when the right ones are fished properly, tht they work really well.

Good to know to you like my material on bass and thanks for thinking of me.

When I was stationed in Alaska, I had a couple of dardevle's in red/white/silver or copper. They had single hooks on them because the river we fished for silvers (coho) had a single hook restriction. Some years later I was stationed in Mississippi used to fish for bass with a friend who knew the area. It was in the back bay area of Biloxi. During the winter we caught quite a few bass on the dardevle's. When it rained a lot and the water was more fresh than brackish we also caught chain pickerel on the same lures. My friend taught me how to rig a rubber band thru the eye of the hook and attache it to the barb so the hook was weedless. This was essential in the weedy areas we fished in the estuary.

Marko:

Every now and then I hear from fishermen around the country who get bass on wobblers. But I doubt very many ever get around to trying them for that purpose.

I've given casting exhibitions a couple of times in Biloxi, Mississippi, but didn't get to fish when I was there. I did get to fish Ross Barnett Reservoir in that state. I fished there while serving as an observer in the 1978 Bassmasters Classic.

Thanks for responding.
