Sweet Louise Sturgeon fishin\' clinic and boat pic
Happened to encounter Sweet Louise on the river yesterday. Bud was out for a little river cruise and swung by where some buddies and I were out anchored up fishing for sturgeon. We rafted up, and I got a chance to check out the Sweet Lousie and the boat is just that, SWEET! What a nice looking boat, super lines, and a great fishing platform!
Though I was still sick as a dog with a cold, it was nice to be with friends, and give Sweet Louise some hot tips on sturgeon fishing. With Bud being new to gator fishing, we made sure to give him the best info available. Here's Paul showing Sweet Louise the famous sturgeon pickle wrap, with the green olive scent topper. Notice the proper use of half-hitches. Nothing gets the gators like pickled pickle with a smelt wrap!
Here's a pic of the Sweet Louise running back down the MC. Like I said, she's a beauty of a boat.

Glad to see you got the SL out there Bud!
I know perfecting your anchor skills with that rig will take some time so stick with it before the springer run heats up. I know we're going to have some nice afternoons sitting on the hook watching the k15s work....

Re: Sweet Louise Sturgeon fishin\' clinic and boat pic
Great, that's just what we need, another gigantic boat on the MC making tsunamis for everyone that doesn't have enough money to buy 27' yachts. And Nalu, thanks for telling everyone and their mother about the channel. Now it is pretty much just the Sea-J and ten of your closest friends sitting in the Santosh hole below Gilbert day after day. It use to be a managable amount of people. Now it looks like a sturgeon tournament every time. Kind of reminds me of Oregon City. I can't thank you enough.

Re: Sweet Louise Sturgeon fishin\' clinic and boat
BottomFeeder-
While I would love to take credit for turning the channel into O.C., by all means I feel that honor is simply too much for lowly 'ol me. For the record, I believe I've only fished one Saturday in the channel in the last two months, and it happened to be this last Saturday that there WAS a sturgeon tourney- Johhny's tavern.
I suppose I will be blamed for there being a lot of boats fishing for springers in the "secret" area of St. Helens this year?
Looking at my notes, the most I have anchored in any one spot in the channel from fall util now is a grand total of 5 times. With the advent of warmer weather it will be less and less as spring approaches... And once mid may hits, I won't be there at all. So relief is in sight! Whew!
And the Santosh hole below Gilbert does produce a few keepers, but not nearly as many as other spots. A fun place to take people that have never caught a sturgeon when everyplace else is slow, but a far cry from the best producing keeper spot in the MC.
BottomFeeder- With all sincerity I would like to take away your apparent resentment towards me somehow making "your" area unamanageable to fish in. It is unfortunate that we do not share the same view about fishing and being on the water. My view is that it is for all, and that in sharing information I in turn will have information shared with me. For me, a glorious day is being on the water, and a bonus is getting a keeper to the boat. With only 5 keepers per year, it's not tough to fill a tag, so why worry? I chat with guys in boats anchored beside me, and am courteous to those in boats as I am running. I have yet to find a day in the MC where I can't find an open spot where I have caught a keeper sized fish in the past.
It is unfortunate that I have encountered one or two in the area that believe it is their god given right to a particular spot or area. If that is the case, I'm happy to move on. I'm fishing for fun, as are those who fish with me.
As for the size of my boat...I don't know what to say about that. In all honesty, I can point out dozens of boats larger than mine that have frequented the MC for years from Rocky Point to St. Helens. I try to be courteous with my wake, and I look at passing each anchored boat and determine whether to jump off plane or move as far away as possible and create as little disturbance as I can. I can honestly say that I've probably made a decision about wake that one or another boat may disagree with, but I certainly live by the cardinal rule that my wake is my responsability. Any time I see a jon boat, or a boat that may have any consequence I make sure that no harm could come.
Anyway- sorry to be long winded, but I'm a bit taken aback. On the salt water sharing information is key, and even on this site I've never given specifics. "fish the MC, and look for deep holes" is about the most I've said.
My sincerest apologies. :depressed:

Nalu,
His moniker is "Bottomfeeder", what did you expect?
And he's from Beaverton so of course he owns the MC. In fact I'm sure he was the first one to discover it.

Re: Sweet Louise Sturgeon fishin\' clinic and boat
Very well said under the circumstance Mike. Once again, we find we can't please everyone. Sadly there will always be a sour apple tossed in amongst the crop. It's too bad we can't all play in the same sandbox and just have fun fishing. That IS what it's all about. Don't sweat it, keep posting. The posts are fun and informative. Most of us really appreciate them very much!

Mike-
You're a good man! Don't let the attitude get to you.
I thought we tried to keep the wake down as well. If I caused any of you guys grief...I am sorry for that.
Peace-
Bud

Re: Sweet Louise Sturgeon fishin\' clinic and boat
The only time we saw ya'll was when you were running side by side by the sawdust piles. The combo wake was pretty big, but no problem for a 20 something sled. NIce boat by the way to the both of you. Someday (I think ) I'll have something like that.
There is enough water for everyone to play nice. and remember that this is not a lake or pond. these guys have as much right to run at speed as you do.(courtesy is the key)

Re: Sweet Louise Sturgeon fishin\' clinic and boat
Thanks for the positive encouragement all! I never thought sharing the super double-secret green olive, half hitch, steinfeld pickle smelt wrap would irritate some of the more experienced gator fishers out there. Who knew?
Baitboy- Thanks for the compliments on the boat. Some people may not realize that if you know what you're looking for, and search around, you can come across good deals on bigger boats. There's more than a few guys on the river that have more money wrapped up in their 21 foot North River sled than I do in my Grady White. I don't hear too many people grumbling about all the rich guys with North Rivers.... Regardless, I've heard all the other Salty Dogs glow about the famous "BaitBoy" and his deck keeping ability. You'll have to share the deck of the Sea-J sometime this summer. I can't wait to hitch a ride with Bud this summer as it will certainly motivate me to get that Bertram 38 I keep looking at! (Alas that is a ways away!)
If our combo wake was too big I certainly apologize. I did look, and was pretty positive I never went past any boats that would have any issue with it, and we both made sure to stick to the far side of the river.

Nalu....you're right in line. I've appreciated your reports, and benefited from them. No "honey-holes" just generic info. I hope someday I can return the favor!
Thanks!
Geez, guess I better not upgrade to that 28 footer now Rod.....maybe I should go back to my 11' Zodiac!!!!!!

I'm sure it's hard to see other people's point of view 10ft above the water doing 30mph. What's next, hovercraft?

After seeing somthing about this on the other board, I had to come over here and see what all the fuss was about. After reading bottom feeders coments, it reminds me why I seldom frequent this board.
Good comments Nalu.

Re: Sweet Louise Sturgeon fishin\' clinic and boat pic
Actually I was the guy in a Kayak just trying to enjoy nature being thankful he had his lifevest on and a firm grip on the paddle. I still don't understand what fuss is all about buying boats the size of houses just to go out and kill one of God's most sucessful creatures. Sure they are tasty, but that's why they make grocery stores isn't it?

Re: Sweet Louise Sturgeon fishin\' clinic and boat

Please feel free to visit one of the other endeavors that I am a part owner in.... PlayboatingNorthwest.com..... I can certainly understand the virtues of the non-motorized boat.... The smallest "boat" I own right now is 54 total gallons, and 5' 10" long! As the editor of "The Gear Pile" I'm right at home in the non-motorized low to the water scene! Click on "The Play Spot" and GASP! you'll find a guide we've compiled that tells everyone where the best spots and water levels are for whitewater kayaking in the playboating scene! See, there I go again telling people where they can go to have a good time!
And as an avid underwater photographer, I place a high value on being at least 10 feet BELOW the water, doing 0 mph... Beauty below the waters surface... Truth be told, I've even been known to write a piece or two on where to go diving, how to get there, and the hazards associated with the dive spot! Dag nab it, spilling the beans again with general information on how to have a good day under the water!
And for the record, the Sea-J is an Ocean going boat that was purchased so I could spend quality time on the Ocean with my father. It is just a bonus that during the winter and spring it makes a great platform for salmon and sturgeon fishing, BBQ'ing with friends, and enjoying the inland waters.
BottomFeeder, again, with sincerity I find it too bad we do not see eye to eye. I do start to find it comical that you would blame ME for all the people in the MC now that I've gone ahead and reviewed your previous posts for the last 2 years.. Out of respect I will refrain from adding anything further.
Group hug anyone?

Re: Sweet Louise Sturgeon fishin\' clinic and boat
I find it comical you think I actually blame you for the people in the MC. People have been stacking up in the MC more and more for the past three years. Way before you arrived. I was going to go tangential and write about how the MC use to be as peaceful as listening to Celine Dion while trimming roses in my flower garden, but I think the jig is up. I just want to kill fish and eat them (the donga need food). Maybe I've eaten too many sturgeon from there. Read my posts a little closer. I'm a bit of an Imp, a tad looney toons crackers man, It's just my nature ya' big wake maker What happened to the days when a guy could have a pen name? Not see eye to eye? Oh come on, I take that to mean "within the BBS world" Heck, I already waved at you on two different occasions when I went by. I will be disappointed if I don't see you out there when they finally do start biting good. See you on the river.
