Anyone been rockfishing lately?
I was thinking of giving it a try either at Depoe or off the jetty at Newport this weekend for lings/greenling/bass.....just wondering if anyone had done the same lately. thanks

Re: Anyone been rockfishing lately?
Russ,
Austin and I coundn't stand it anymore and went rock fishing at Boiler Bay a couple weeks ago during the colder weather. The results were 5 lings hooked, but only one legal, and 5 blacks hooked, but only kept 2 that were just right for the panko pan.
They were shy bitin' so give them a little, but they sure were tasty!
We were using Dan's Rx for them with 1/2 to 1-1/2 jig heads.
Good luck and have fun, we're waiting for the "boatable" days now.
Jamie

Re: Anyone been rockfishing lately?
This is something I'm really interested in doing but am having problems finding resources or actual locations. A lot of people seem to reference Depoe Bay. All I really know of Depoe Bay is the rock wall in front of the shops. What areas are good for fishing? I'm guessing I can just use my steelhead rod and maybe throw some heavier line (like 20#) on there? If I get to the right location and can probably figure out the rest.
Thanks,
T-man

Re: Anyone been rockfishing lately?
We wentt today...quick limits on bass and lings. We released probably 10 other lings most were legal size.
Also talked with one guy who said he caught 20 pounds of herring yesterday. He was chasing schools around the bay.
Good Luck Walter....we were right out in front of Seal rocks in 70 to 90 feet.

Re: Anyone been rockfishing lately?
Oh Mark...I did have to work last week....oh by the way, Thanks for the shirt. Nice graphics.
Next time could you find one with frills, and fluffies?
You two are sick......
Heck I don't know what kind of bass they were, I havent taken the class yet. I actually caught 3 canaries also, but in shallow water and they swam away. Don't worry....they didn't get counted against us.
I had to purple haze fish traps that got hammered till they fell off.
Mark...your boat is still floating.

Re: Anyone been rockfishing lately?
We went out for a few hours. My son got his first lings. 32" and 34". The others were about the same size. Boy did he have fun when they were taking out drag. Ended up catching 25-30 between the 3 of us, most were legal. Did not go for any blacks. I did release 1 cabezon about 28". Ocean could have been better but a fun day was had by all.

Re: Anyone been rockfishing lately?
This is great info guys thanks for posting!!!
one question though...Is there anywhere a guy can go WITHOUT a boat and fish the depoe/newport area??
is there anyone who knows the spots willing to show a corvallis guy where they are some weekend?

Here you go...
A link to an article and post by the venerable--if tempermental Depoe Bay Dan. He is an extremely knowledgable fisherman who lived in Depoe and filleted more critters than you could shake a stick at.
Check it out:
Old Rock Fish / Surf Fishing Post
I enjoy fishing off the rocks or for perch in the surf almost as much as from a boat. I'd join you sometime.
Picking the right day is CRITICAL, just like it is in a boat--only even more so.
Swell should be no more than 6 feet, without much wind.
On the right day though--you can limit!
PM me if you'd like.
Charlie

Re: Here you go...
I'm another corvallis boy wanting to go for lings and rockfish. Been waiting for the ocean to lay down a little, getting tired of waiting, about to go crab in the bay and try for herring. gotta get on the water! I'm interested in going with a group. Got room for 3 more besides me.
