Seals in the river...smelt?
not to get anybody all wigged out but, good sources tell me of seals spotted working the river up from cathlamet.
none were seen with big fish, but they apparently were working the water really good. Could this be a sign of a pilot run of smelt?

Re: Seals in the river...smelt?
A few early smelt come in almost every year. Not surprised. There was an article in the Longview paper a week or so ago about some commercial testing or something gettin 75 or 100 lbs, or so.Down in the Cathlamet area.Dont remember the specifics but somewhere along those lines.Saw quite a few seals 3 wks ago in Longview area of the big C. Figured then they probably followed a few smelt up.

My commercial fishing sources (family) in Cathlamet tell me a few smelt went through, but the seals seem to be following STEELIES.

Re: Seals in the river...smelt?
Shhhh, don't tell anybody but the smelt enter the Columbia and start spawning in the main river in January. Then there are the shad that start trickling in. Plus the steelies. And ever such a few springers. Just don't tell anyone.

Re: Seals in the river...smelt?
The run is predicted to be smaller than last years. That given, smelt are 1 of the least studied fish there are.I dont think that the estimates are very accurate.Just a big guess.

I've seen seals eating sturgeon, shad and salmon, why not steelhead?

Re: Seals in the river...smelt?
STS did a story about the Pinnheads and found out that the seals are back to thier historical numbers, but the salmon are not even near the historical numbers! !! I think they should maybe try to lower the seal population

Re: Seals in the river...smelt?
Nobody that I know of proposed delisting the salmon. If I recall correctly, the proposed ESA listing moved one fish strain from threatened to the endangered group, moved one or two from unlisted to threatened and moved one from threatened to unlisted. I think the net result was one fewer listed fish strain of the 37 sub-species on the list.
Careful, Judy, that is how nasty rumors get started.

Re: Seals in the river...smelt?
Last year we saw a few seals bring sturgeon to the top and start shreding them like a salmon. That was the first time I had seen that.

Hey Z-Man. That is an old nickname of mine. Couldn't have used that moniker when I signed up cause you had it.
Being member #347, why do you have so few posts?
Just curious.
