Default Siletz slow but..

First time back on the water in three years. As luck would have it I boated to nice hatchery bucks. Both were kinda funny. The first hit my hook and then was gone! Wait a minute he's still there, Oh now he's jumping and trying to wrap around the anchor line. How I got to the stern of the boat so quick I'll never know..oh great he's under the boat. Geez, nows he's headed back downstream and not giving up. we had to follow him down to the next hole before he finally got wore out. The second one wasn't nearly as fiesty but when I realised he had hooked himself, he was way up behind the boat instead of where I thought I was drifting across the river. Man am I out of practice! Well, not anymore. Fun Day! No rain, Warm. thank goodness, my buddy gave me a shower under the Moonshine park waterfall right off the get go...he said it was an accident. His wife said he does that all the time. Hmmm.

snakebite,
What boat were you in? I tried to scan everyone that passed for ifish stickers (even though I haven't gotten mine on yet  ) but didn't see too many. I had the white w/black trim Motion Marine boat with two of my buddies in it. We didn't see too many fish caught, we got into two but lost one as we went through a small rapid. Give me a shout if you see me again!

Man it sure was a zoo down there this weekend. There were boat trailers parked on both sides of the street all the way to the market in the town of Siletz yesterday. I talked with very few folks that had found a fish. Guess I'll move back down south. I know there are fish down there!

I just didn't see the crowd. I was drifting the town dirft from 7:30 until 5:00. I took myself. It's been so long since I've been on the river without having to hear "I gotta be home by 3" or such comments. I fished runs as long and how ever I wanted. I pulled hot shots, bait, used floats and spinners and did a lot of dirft fishing. Caught my first fish with bait behind a diver. 18' hatchery. Spunky lil' fish and I hope to see him again in a year or so.
Most boats that flew by me like they had some where to be. Myself, my place was on
the river
edit: sparkleboy, I know I'd tell you when i had a open seat. I just had to use it Sunday for my sanity. I hope you understand. I'll certanly let you know when it's free next time!

Cully,

Were you in the woody? If you were we wwent past you by the water intake hole. I was in the black Willie with the electric motor. We hit a few fish. We got a late start and went clear to the second steel bridge, thats why we just floated on by you. Plus you were already in the hole so we just let you have it.
Good job on the fish! We got a piggy wild fish on down the river from you a little ways.

Hey Twitches! WE got in real late ~10AM and followed most everyone else. White smoker craft, no sticker (I bet I'm in trouble now, but it's my step sons boat). His wife has the shuttle service, so he knows where to fish.

Cully, the drift from town down to the bridge (Lajolla) is a very easy drift, and has two white water spots, the first is the first turn to the left as you start your drift (no tricks here, easy to read the water) and the same on the riffle about 3/4 of a mile befor the take out. The bigger issue is the takeout at Lajolla, you need about 100 ft rope to pull your boat up the slide. Drive down there and take a look befor you do the drift, just so you know what you are getting into. The drift from moonshine to twin-bridges is also pretty straight forward, but perhaps a little more skill involved than the town drift, and the one below. Hope this helps,
See you on the river,
Captn

Hey Cully -
I know how that is! I treated myself to some of that on Saturday. I fished all day Saturday and found a summer which was in pretty good shape. I fished all day today with my dad and was equally surprised when I caught another summer, 200 yards above where I had caught the summer on Saturday!
I'm sure trying to find those winter fish. Crazy though - Since December 20th I've caught four fish on the Siletz. Three of them have been summers.

P.S. Cully - I'm like you when it comes to getting off the river...that's why I get fed up with taking my friends sometimes. It should be the "guides'" decision when to quit. Glad you had a good day today! Did you get wet? The weather wasn't too bad for the most part.

sparkleboy, wet is pretty much a thing of the past for me anymore unless i fall in the river which i haven't done since last winter on the Alsea. When I started fishing 10 years ago I fished with what I wore out of my drawers. Slowly and delibratly I've added layers so that now even in a down pour I can be comfy... unless of course I fall in. If that happens I've got a dry bag full of dry clothes.

I've managed to stay mostly dry. Did get a little bit of water down the ol' hipboots today, but I haven't fallen in since the summer, and it was actually refreshing then!

Cully,

Twin bridges all the way to Morgan park is pretty easy to float. Taking out at the bridge is a big hassle, Im not doing it again. Next time you see me make sure you say hi.

willierower, yep me in the woody. Is the water intake the two huge cement slabs? I should have hooked a fish there! I could have fished that run longer and better. I did know by your open seat post that you were going to be on the Siletz. I wish I would have asked you if you were you. Also I could have peeked inside that pretty boat and taken a look at your rowers seat. I saw a couple of other willies too. One of the willies I saw was a very ol' one. Old paint with a bit of blue. The rower said it was the second one Willie ever built. Pretty rough looking but obviously built to last and last. Are you a mid 30's wipper snapper? Good job on the fish. I heard of others that caught wild ones too. Hey, willierower. Is the next run down harder, easier or about the same as the around the town drift? I've been confining myself to the around the town drift now for two years and I'm ready to add some variety. How bout the twin bridges run ability wise?

Hey all, I am fairly new here, but just wanted to say that I too was on the Siletz this weekend. Both days in fact. I fished at Moonshine on Sat. Rolled one, and lost one. Sunday, I was at the lower deadline hole up in the gorge. I caught 1 hatchery buck around 8lbs., and let a really nice 12-13lbs. chrome wild hen go. I had 3 other really good hit, but could get the hook set fast enough. This was after 4 guys left the hole to myself and first time steelheading girlfriend. Wish I was there today, instead of working. I hope to get the pics back soon so I can get them posted.
