I wonder what happened to the guy that took these photo's.

I have several more of these if you would like to view them but these two photo's really describe the degree of devastation that took place over seas.

Got these from someone that has relatives living in India near where this happened.

Interesting photo's, but what is up with the smiles on the people faces in the foreground. Shouldn't it be a look of terror. Any thought that these are fake?

I thought the same thing but when you see the rest of the pictures it is obvious that they are real. I can't explain the expressions and as I said, What happened to the guy with the camera ? Seems like he wouldn't have made it.

Looks almost like a superimpossed picture of a wave crashing on a bunch of people having fun.

I reviewed the picture above to see if I could get a closer look with higher magnification. What occured to me when I viewed closer, who knows how one might react in a situation where you realize in a moment you will be dead ? The horrific thoughts of disbelief and the realization of the helpless, futile situation you are in. Would you be smiling, Crying, laughing? These picture are frightning to me.

The first picture is very interesting. Wish there was a better sense of perspective. That is what I imagine a tsunami to look like. Look at the wet beach where it looks like the sea has receeded.

That being said, I call FAKEY! on all these photos. Beyond the first one, they are ridiculous.

Perhaps Water Dog can recall where this is in Asia but each year in the far east there is a sea wall that has a predictable tidal surge which is like clockwork. All the locals come out for it (stupid fools) and inevitably someone is swept away during the festivities. It's like a 10ft surge that always washes over the wall. These pictures look suspeciously like those I have seen in a TV documentary this year.

Not trying to discredit Abalone here but the photos look to be a little amise of reality. Could be wrong though.

Well, I've seen photos of tidal waves which are sometimes called Tidal Surges or Tidal Bores. These are waves or surges that are generated by tidal action as opposed to a seismic occurrence or displacement.

Your thread title is tidal wave and it looks a lot like one. Just curious.

Come on ! Think about this for a moment.

These people didn't see it coming. It may as well have been a Nucleur Blast. What would you expect to see ? Something like a Holiwood movie where everything is in slow motion, people paniced. Moms running around picking up their kids.

They said on the news the shock ( Shook ?) wave traveled 400 mile per hour. The wave slowed down when it hit shallow water but think of the tremdous Crash that took place when this thing hit.

Shook wave ! Sounds like a good title for a Blues tune.

You shook me baby, you shook me all night loooonnggg.

It is unfortunate that so many people are killed by their own curiosity. I guess that in some aspect it could be considered natural to look. Perhaps one of those Darwin things.

As the wave base intersects the continental shelf (mind you the wave base is very close to the bottom in the first place in this situation) it is compressed. Because water is very difficult to compress, the column of water is lifted and its speed slows dowm. This displacement draws the water toward the wave face, leaving the beach at a fast and very noticable rate.

I could only guess that the majority of people in the region would not understand the meaning of the water going because of the infrequent nature of tsunami in the Indian Ocean.

I have some relatives that are visiting Thailand right now, they were at a beach resort when the wave struck. Here is the e-mail that they sent out to let everybody know they were O.K. It is quite eye opening.

Good morning all. This is Bill writing from Liz's e-mail. We had an unusual day yesterday, due to the big quake in the sea near Sumatra. Liz and I are both fine, and our beachfront cottage also survived the seismic waves that swept the western beaches of Koh Lanta.
Neither of us felt the earthquake at around 8:30 a.m. Nor did anyone else around us mention feeling anything. We had finished our breakfast in the open-air pavilion overlooking the blue sea, and Liz had returned to the bungelow a hundred yards north on the beach to finish some watercolor paintings, and I had sauntered up to the main road to an internet shop a quarter mile south. About 11:00 a.m. the young Thai woman in the shop told me quite suddenly to "go, go, no pay...go"; a Thai man from next door came and mentioned earthquake, big waves. I ran back to the bungelow just in time to see the water reach its zenith and start sweeping back seaward. Neighboring resorts had lost some beachfront bungelows (lower than our), but our resort appeared relatively dry...water washing across the sidewalks, debris everywhere, and roaring currants pounding high along the seawall. Our bungelow had been about six inches above the high water, the door unlocked and Liz was gone...Good. I had worried that in her intent on painting and poor hearing that she may had missed any warning. Actually she had been the first to realize what was going on and immediately headed for high ground, stppoing at the highway to get more bottled water and look for me. We eventually linked up high on a hill, maybe 100 feet above the sea. We waited all day, and slept all night with the hundreds of other tourists and local Thai's...the beach had become a mandatory evacuation area...but not before I returned and gathered up most of our things.
Many were not so fortunate, we hear this morning of the hundreds of deaths in the Thai islands; possibly 22 here on Koh Lanta. We were due to ferry out this morning to Phuket. but the docks are gone and the ferries out of service. We'll stick around for a few more days and help the Thai folks such as we can. The local folks were great; eager to round up food and drink and to transport bedding, etc. and allow use of bathrooms, etc.
We met several who had been caught in the waves and lost everything...their bungelows collapsed and swept away. Others in our little circle of friends had seen sunbathers and snorkler being swept brutally ashore and then. sometimes, back out to sea. Neither Liz nor I actually witnessed the waves first striking shore.Rumors and anxiety ruled the day and night as we all quietly watched from the safety of high ground. All of you probably have more details than we; although power has largely been maintained, along with phone and internet here on this island. A single surveilance copter was seen this morning scouting the beaches for damage. We are heading in a few minutes to Saladan, the ferry port village where we expect to see unhappy sights as we try to reschedule flights and and travel plans. Meanwhile we are well cared for at the Good Days Resort; remain in good health and spirits and will keep you informed. We were relieved to be able to call Laura briefly last night, waking her up before she had heard any news of the quake, etc.
More later, loves, Bill and Liz
.

Scary stuff although I wonder about a few of the pictures. The first one due to where the picture was taken. I mean right in the wave as it's going by you? You'd have to be in a boat or jetty to get a shot like that don't you think?

Have to wonder how the photographer survived a couple of those shots too.

I've been to Phuket several times and have fished and snorkeled around some of the islands that got hit hard. Was planning on going for the holidays but decided it was to expensive this time of year. It's a real shock to see places you'be been wiped out.

The only thing I can figure is that the person taking the shot was using a Video Camera and someone was viewing it from a remote location..

BTW... these picture are real.. not fake...

More firsthand news from the tsunami zone...

>>Good morning from Koh Lanta. It is Wednesday morning, the 29th. Here life
>>has returned almost to normal in most appearances...with an underlying
>>sense of grief. The electric power was off only a short while immediately
>>after the seismic waves on the 26th. Cable news from CNN, BBC, etc. is
>>always on in every cafe, and we are well informed on the big picture, but
>>still in the dark about more local things. The ferries to Phuket are not
>>running, and no one knows when they might resume...some rumors say any day
>>now, but when I pressed the issue with workers at the ferry dock, they
>>could tell me nothing, only suggesting many days away. The ferries to
>>Phuket have always operated via Ko Phi Phi which is kind of a major
>>transfer point, and Phi Phi is essentially wiped out...no pier, no
>>village, hundreds of bungelows washed out to sea, and hundreds dead...many
>>bodies still floating in the sea never to be recovered. We can see the
>>high cliffs of Phi Phi across the calm blue sea from our bungelow. No
>>lights shine from it at night anymore. There is a route to the mainland
>>via two short auto-ferry connections, and the vans and pickups hauling
>>tourists there have been fully booked for the next several days. On the
>>mainland all must transfer to other vehickles to Krabi, also hard hit.
>>From Krabi there is no longer any connecting ferry(3 hours) or bus service
>>(6 hours) to Phuket. Even the connecting flights to Phuket have been
>>diverted to evacuate everyone to Bangkok. We left our "India Suitcase" at

>>
>>Meanwhile, Bangkok is becoming fully booked up for the New Years holidays

>>Koh Lanta, our accomodations quite comfortable, and we can perhaps be of
>>some small assistance in the community. Most tourists have been leaving;

>>The only hard news we get about the other islands is via BBC and

They may be real but they also may not be from the tsunami that took place on Sunday. How do you know that the pictures are from the tsunami? Haven't seen any of these pics on the news and you'd think that with shots like these they'd get picked up by some news service.

I think the first one is probably the one that doesn't look right out of all of them because of the relation to the water and the photographer. Do any of you honestly think a person would be trying to take a picture from a boat (because it's obvious the person is on the water) that is about to get hit by a tsunami? Unless that wave is about a foot high but no way to determine scale. Any of you see the boat at the beach in Thailand get hit? Those guys didn't look like they were running to get a camera.

One other thing is that there was no warning. People had no advanced warning to go to the beach and and check things out. Which is exactly what people are doing in a few of the pictures as they line the rails.
