Sandy River Deadline Change...Anyone Care?
I know this isn't new news but I'm curious what the opinions are about the new deadline change on the Sandy. It used to be that you couldn't fish from a boat around Oxbow Park (you had to get out of the boat to fish) but as of Jan 1st most of that area can now be fished from the boat.
I for one enjoyed an area where I could bank fish and didn't have to worry about a boat hogging a hole all day. Both F&H News and STS have made a point out of crediting Jack Glass for spearheading this change and "opening up new water" for boat fishermen. That water has always been open - you just had to get out of the boat.
There are so many places that are being taken away from the bank fishermen year after year. While this area isn't being completely taken away it was an area that was set aside for the bankie and now it's gone too. I for one don't appreciate it.

I disagree. I doubt it will be the big deal you are working it up to be. Old story, old argument, same conclusions ultimately. Inconsiderate people are inconsiderate whether they are standing on the bank next to you cussing and littering or clogging up a drift in a boat. Not being argumentative, just don't agree.

Re: Sandy River Deadline Change...Anyone Care?
I'm looking forward to the change. Boaters and bankies just have to respect each other. I enjoy boating and bankin' it and give way to either depending on which way I'm fishin.

Re: Sandy River Deadline Change...Anyone Care?
Did you attend the ODFW hearings on the new reg changes? If so did you testify? Just didn't want this thread to go the way the Three Rivers thread went, which was a bunch of fisherman complaining about reg changes. But none of them attended the hearings, oh well, you snooze you lose I guess.
With the gate locked until 06:00am,bankers should have no trouble getting setup in their favorite hole way before the boats can launch and row down. With a little common courtesy, all can have a good fishing experience.

Re: Sandy River Deadline Change...Anyone Care?
I say way to go Jack and all the others. No one is saying bankies can't fish the river now. The way I see it is there is just more opportunity for all. A little common courtesy and everyone wins. It's not like they said its boat only now ( that would be as bad as saying bankies only). I think its time we stop choosing one group over another and provide opportunities for all group. Then maybe we could all learn to play nice together.
If not I'm taking my ball and going home.

Re: Sandy River Deadline Change...Anyone Care?
For the most part I agree with the sentiment expressed by others. I fish the Sandy quite a bit, probably half the time from the bank. I think there's plenty of water in this stretch that with proper ettiquette (spelling?)there shouldn't be many issues. However, when I do dump my drifter in the water at Oxbow, I did like that the old regulation spread out the boat pressure - some would boogie down to the deadline to start pulling plugs,diver/bait, while others would fish the upper half slow, getting out of the boat at the good water. Again, I liked this effect of the old regulation but feel no strong opinions either way.
I can say, I can't wait to run plugs through some water that I've drooled over for a long time. Plus, some of those holes for springers will fish much better now.
Good luck and tight lines.

Re: Sandy River Deadline Change...Anyone Care?
I'm grateful to Jack Glass and whoever else helped get the deadline changed. Don't worry West Linn Wader! I float by the bank fishermen without getting in their way. I think most other boat fishermen will be considerate too.
There will always a few inconsiderate people out there, but they'll cause problems even if they're on the bank.

Re: Sandy River Deadline Change...Anyone Care?
Springers dont stand a chance now.... OK for steelies but now we get to back bounce all those great holes.. The holes occupied by bankers are just it.. good bank holes, I will still get out of the boat to fish them... the long stretches of plug\diver water is gonna be good, but I rarley see a banker fishin it..usually bankies are pounding the holes and tail-outs...

Re: Sandy River Deadline Change...Anyone Care?
I think the regs against fishing in a boat were more of a conservation issue than a reg "against" boaters. They've been doing studies on the Deschutes, Sandy, etc. about how deadly the tactics you use in a boat are to fish populations, and unless I'm way off, that is why those stretches were closed.
However, it seems to me most of the "boaty" water is separated from the "bankie" water more or less, unless you're throwing hardware or driftfishing from the boat. I don't know that it'll affect me much though, because I don't go to Oxbow that often because they don't allow dogs.
Cheers,
L
