Does anyone know if you have to register a pontoon boat if you have a trolling motor on it? I have a friend who says only 14 ft. or better that have a 4hp or higher have to register

Conrad

If you put a motor on it, you have to register it.

Check out this link for laws and regulations

Oregon State Marine Board

This will answer all of your questions.

Q: Do I need to register my float tube or small pontoon boat if I put a motor on it?
A: Yes. Any watercraft with a motor must be registered with the Marine Board. You will need to title ($30) and register ($3 per foot and each portion of a foot) your motorized float tube or pontoon boat. You can print the Application for Boat Title (PDF - 13k). We need the manufacturer's statement of origin and/or bill of sale. If there is no Hull Identification Number (HIN) on the boat, we will need to assign one. If you want a temporary permit, write call (503) 378-8587 and ask for additional instructions or e-mail your request to marine.board@state.or.us. Send all paperwork and fees to OSMB, PO Box 14145, Salem, OR 97309.

Correct me if I'm wrong but if you are using an 'electric' motor you don't need to?

Bob,

Mark is correct. If it has a motor it must be registered.

If it has a motor you have to register it, we got a citation with our drift boat and an electric trolling motor!!! hope this helps.
