Fish Identification Help
It was the weekend after Coho season closed, my son and I were trying to work our way through these fish to hook-up with same nooks. We were fishing in 115’ of water and down about 45’ – 50’. After what seem to be a few hundred hook ups with Coho’s, Zzzzzzzziiiiiiiing my sons went down hard! “Here’s your big nook” I told him. After about a 15 min. battle here is what he had on.
I’ve been told it is a Dog fish, a Sand shark, as well as many others. Does anyone know exactly what it is?
As you can see he was excited!
It was released unharmed.
Thanks,
Dave

Re: Fish Identification Help
Did it bark and wag its' tail when you held up a treat. Did it chase any catfish? These are just few of the clues you can tell it was a dogfish. What did it's breath smell like? Milkbones?
Walks like a dogfish, barks like a dogfish, .................... it's a shark.

Re: Fish Identification Help
I used to catch those during late night pier fishing trips in college. They fillet up well and marinated in Newman's Italian dressing overnight and grilled on the BBQ make for fine eating. No kidding!

Re: Fish Identification Help
If they are that good, I'm upset that we released it. The regs state that "a White or Basking Shark must be released unharmed". When in doubt let it go!

Re: Fish Identification Help
Yes, Dog Fish. There are so many up here in the San Juans that it almost makes salmon impossible......Well, almost. They tear up leaders and love herring. Makes me mad just thinking about those things.

Re: Fish Identification Help
cade,
Yes, that "little spike" can get ya.
I had one sting me while I was shaking it off a few years ago and my hand went numb for a few hours. It got me on top of a finger. I made it bleed quite abit and I think that helped to get some of the poisen out of the wound.
Now I usually just cut the leader and cry about another 2 Gammies and a Herring gone. Nasty little buggers they are!

Re: Fish Identification Help
I call them Devious Dogs. Troll faster and you might avoid them. Mooch and you will surely catch them. They can be quite thick here in the Puget sound. Sometimes they even try to ruin my day! They will for sure ruin your leader almost every time.
Bad doggy Noooo!
