Default Help I have a Hamster loose in the house

I have a rogue Hamster in the house, and I can't seem to catch him, the kids’ think this is cool but not the wife. Anybody have any sure fire ways to live catch a not so tame hamster .

My dad had to tear into a wall to get my sister's hamster out about 40 years ago. He was still pi--ed about it just a few years ago.

Smooth sided, tall garbage can with a ramp of some sort up to the rim with very favorite hamster food and water in the bottom. You hope the little sucker falls in and can't get back out. We find mice in our garbage cans at work all the time so I know it works.

D-Con. The hamster will only stink until it dries up. It worked on mice in my bachelor days. Now, according to my wife, a mouse in the home means we have to move.

STGrule has the right idea but use a 5 gallon bucket (6 inches of water optional) with a ramp. lay a wooden dowel across the top that is stuck through a pop can so it sits in the middle. Put some peanut butter on the pop can. When the little rodent walks up the rap across the dowel and on to the pop can it will spin sending the critter to the bottom of the bucket. It works for mice as well!!

That brought back some memories...My hamster got loose one night and ended up chewing through the cover on the back of the couch. My Dad had to turn it over and partially remove the back. After that we made sure something heavy sat on the top of his cage. If I remember correctly, it was the cats sitting next to the couch that helped us figure out where he was

have you tried live traps that are designed for other rodents (mice/rats). they are available at most hardware stores. we used them once when my pet rat got out of its cage.

Do you see it running around the house at all?

When I was a kid we had several rodent pets... a few times - when they'd get out, we'd prop up a coffee can or bucket with a stick with a string attached to it. When the loose mouse or rat would go for the bait, we'd pull the stick out under the can or bucket to trap them. Worked for us a few times.

Do you know anyone that has an attractive hamster of the opposite sex?

Good luck, I hope you find it soon.

Dont give it any food or water outside the cage.

Put the cage with both on the floor in the room it is in with the cage door open.

Confine it to one room.

I cant believe its still out running around.

Consider yourself lucky. When my kids were young, we had a snake that managed to get out.

We searched all over but never found it. We think it might have gotten into the attic crawlspaces. We used to have mice but then they went away.

We sold the house after a year and often wondered if the snake died or managed to survive on mice. I hope that it just got outside.

I always had a bad feeling that some poor person might wake up some night with a snake in their bed. Oh well.

Jetsled1,
Two words......Duct Tape. Cut a bunch of 6 foot strips of tape and lay them around the house, sticky side up. The easy part will be catching the little bugger. The hard part will be removing the tape without taking all the fur off.
