Default Bankie Launching the Boat

I think I have finally fixed the short in the headlight circuit on the trusty(?) ol' Scout and I can finally tow the drift boat again. (Replaced the switch.)

I will be in Newport this weekend for a meeting and should be able to launch the boat with 6 hp motor and two nephews for some salmon fishing in tidewater, possibly Yaquina, Siletz or Waldport.

Nearly all my salmon experience is bobber/eggs from the bank in the Tillamook system.

I'm not familiar with the launches on the central coast and I would appreciate advice about launches where we don't have to motor far to be fishing. I would also appreciate some comments about fishing spinners or kwikfish relative to the tides. I'll have cured some Amerman eggs and I may be able to spot some bobber holes (look for other boats!). But we may need a backup strategy and want to look like we know what we are doing (main thing, look good!)

Thanks!

TC

1966 Scout. It has a small Ford V-8 under the hood and less than 100K miles.

It is always an adventure. Two summers ago I was towing the drift boat to Maupin via Hwy 197. I was atuned to engine overheating as we climbed the big hill south of Biggs. The temperature gauge was not working, but the smell of coolant would be the alert. As we crossed the top of the hill and the coolant smell became more distinct, the engine died. I left the truck in gear as we started coasting down the other side, figuring the spinning fan and water pump would help cool the engine and it would fire up again. After a mile or more of coasting with no response from the engine, my wife said, "Check the fuel selector switch". Sure enough, we had drained one tank right as we crossed the top of the hill. I turned the fuel selector switch and it fired right up. We installed a larger radiator and new temperature gauge after that.

It also has a new exhaust system after a close encounter with the rocks driving a very steep track into/out of the John Day Canyon last year.

I have always found Sawyers Landing to be a fine place to launch at Yaquina and be in the tidal fishing area within a few minutes. It is a hoist and fairly resonable priced. I think a 14 ft is about $12 or so.

My first vehicle was a 67 Sout with a 4 banger and positrac rear end. To top it off it was an old mail delivery truck so the driver side was on the right and there was a pan on the left side that I finally took out and replaced with a bucket seat. Mine had vapor lock issues and many time in the deep deep south of Mizzizzippi I would end up on the side of the road and have to wait for it to disapate. Man I had some good times in it though.

There is a very nice boat launch in Toledo out by the airport. It is free and has restrooms and a small fish cleaning station also.
