Default Ship aground in Newport inside the South Jetty

An 80 commercial fishing boat "The Boss" was pushed by a large wave into the South Jetty @ 2 am this morning. It was coming in with 1 1/2 tons of tuna for one of the processors. The crew was taken off the ship safely. The CG responded and put pumps on board to try and get the ship underway. This attempt failed and it is now a salvage operation. One of the main concerns now is the 1000 gals of fuel that is supposed to still be on board the ship. As of 1 pm it was still out there.

What a shame! All that TUNA! going to waste! I hope the fuel stays contained until they can do something about it. Looks like the seas will get worse before they get better. :depressed:

Happy note that the crew got away clean, though.

That ought to draw some crabs into the bay

100 - 30lb tuna
or, 150 - 20lb tuna

I hope they can keep the fuels contained.

Whats with these 'large' waves pushing huge boats around lately?

Has the Yaquina bar become treacherous?

We seem to be having more trouble as of late than the Big C.

Ride Red, The swell was pretty big last night but not tsunami height. Some of the talk is that the crews of the last two mishaps were not familiar with or first time to the area and both incidences were at night. So the bar has not gotten more dangerous but it is a good reminder to be safe out there and to pay attention. We did see a door floating down by Waldport last Saturday. From the 47'er that went down a few weeks ago?
After they declared this ship a salvage the CG went out to take over a tow from another vessel bringing in another boat that was without power. Sounds like it was a busy night for Station Yaquina Bay.

I went under the bridge at 7:15 or so headed "outside" for a day of salmon trolling and noticed much debris such as cylindrical foam floats, clothing, bouys etc west of the bridge. I think I was the first one there this am shortly after daylite and the CG was on duty on the SJetty w/4whl drive and a crew. I drove up to the stern which was sticking up, bow facing west down on the bottom and debris everywhere. I did not notice any diesel slick or fuel contaminaqtion as it was ROUGH and lots of foam which you get on a flood tide. The bar was big like 10 to 14 ft and slopping over the entire channnel from the North and popping inside 6-8 ft+ on the series. I turned around of course and ran up the bay and as I got to the bridge the CG got out one of the ridgid hull small craft and intercepted myself and a buddy in his boat too. There was clothing all kinds of stuff around and lots of wood, lumber, and stuff from the vessel. When I drove up to it looking for a name on the transom, no name at all. I was in town by noon after catching my limit of Chinook in an hour or so, one was 25 pounds and the name the "Boss" was mentioned by one of the Port Commissioners I ran into. The ocean was FINE last nite and did it come up in a matter of 5-6 hours!!!!! I mean Large!!!!!! This is a warning of the change of Solstice guys! Be careful offshore chasing "bugeyes"! The swell can come from offshore big time and it is not forgiving!!!!!!
