Re: Ship aground in Newport inside the South Jetty
I went under the bridge at 7:15 or so headed "outside" for a day of salmon trolling and noticed much debris such as cylindrical foam floats, clothing, bouys etc west of the bridge. I think I was the first one there this am shortly after daylite and the CG was on duty on the SJetty w/4whl drive and a crew. I drove up to the stern which was sticking up, bow facing west down on the bottom and debris everywhere. I did not notice any diesel slick or fuel contaminaqtion as it was ROUGH and lots of foam which you get on a flood tide. The bar was big like 10 to 14 ft and slopping over the entire channnel from the North and popping inside 6-8 ft+ on the series. I turned around of course and ran up the bay and as I got to the bridge the CG got out one of the ridgid hull small craft and intercepted myself and a buddy in his boat too. There was clothing all kinds of stuff around and lots of wood, lumber, and stuff from the vessel. When I drove up to it looking for a name on the transom, no name at all. I was in town by noon after catching my limit of Chinook in an hour or so, one was 25 pounds and the name the "Boss" was mentioned by one of the Port Commissioners I ran into. The ocean was FINE last nite and did it come up in a matter of 5-6 hours!!!!! I mean Large!!!!!! This is a warning of the change of Solstice guys! Be careful offshore chasing "bugeyes"! The swell can come from offshore big time and it is not forgiving!!!!!!
