Sea Lion at 42nd St Boat Ramp
Yesterday I was practicing with my GPS in the Columbia out in front of the 42nd Street boat ramp. I was surprised to see a large sea lion. They're fairly common that far up the river when there is a good run of fish going through but I didn't expect to see one this time of year. Not sure what, if anything, I should be learning fron the encounter. What do you think?

The smelt are in the mainstem Columbia right now spawning. The predators follow the prey.

Re: Sea Lion at 42nd St Boat Ramp
Two saturdays ago there was a big guy at T-6 feeding on shaker sturgeon in the 85 ft hole. He was there all day long as well as a big flock of seaguls. Nothing like early arrivers.

Re: Sea Lion at 42nd St Boat Ramp
We saw a large sea lion down around Frenchmans Bar about month ago. I figured they were anticipating the smelt run.

Re: Sea Lion at 42nd St Boat Ramp
When I worked on a local cruise ship that went up the Columbia I observed one above Boneville. The only way to get up is through the locks.

Re: Sea Lion at 42nd St Boat Ramp
Just read a couple posts from the St Helens area. They talked about seeing sea lions eating sturgeon. Why come all the way up here for sturgeon? They could do that down at Astoria. Oh well, guess it's not to unusual to see them up here this time of year.

Re: Sea Lion at 42nd St Boat Ramp
I blame that one on the board. It said flood protection and I waited two minutes. Then I did it again. Guess it went through. Everyone at work picks on me. Another one is ok too.
