WDFW site is horrible. Can someone help a brother out that's only dipped smelt many moons ago?

What is required to dip smelt in the Cowlitz?
  • Nothing?
  • Freshwater licence?
  • What's the limit? 10 lbs?
  • How much of a 5 gal. bucket is that?

Thanks,
Freakwater

No license. 10lbs. 10lbs in a five gallon bucket (roughly a quarter filled).

That's great if there in the Sandy also it will definately help with the crowds. If a guy were to show up without a net are people letting others dip with theirs?

What will all the rain do to the smelt fishing this Saturday? Does the Cowlitz blow out like the other rivers or will the smelt still be around?

If the dipping is even close to what it was last week you should have no problem borrowing a net.

With this warm rain it might just be one dip and done.

I still oppose the Harvest mentality at WDFW.
This is what feeds the estuary salmon IMHO.

Stomach contents of 10-12 smelt were pretty regular with what I observed here, Cathlamet last year.

Cowlitz River smelt fishery opens
for six more hours this Saturday

OLYMPIA - Recreational dip-netters will have one more day - Saturday (March 8) - to catch eulachon smelt on the Cowlitz River.
Fishing with dip nets will be allowed from the riverbank from 6 a.m. until noon, under a new rule approved by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW). Each dip-netter may retain 10 pounds of smelt for the day.
Guy Norman, WDFW southwest regional director, said the extra day of fishing will allow the department to collect additional data on the movement of eulachon smelt into the Cowlitz River.
"The fishery was open for four partial days over the past month, but dip-netters didn't actually land any smelt until March 1," Norman said. "Catch rates were extremely good that day, indicating a strong run, and another opening will give us a better idea of just how strong that run is."
Prior to last month, the recreational smelt fishery had been closed for three years and was listed as threatened under the federal Endangered Species Act after more than a decade of declining returns. However, since 2011, smelt returns to the Columbia River have shown significant improvement, Norman said.
Working in concert with NOAA-Fisheries, state fishery managers developed limited sport and commercial fisheries this year to gather basic biological data on the returning fish. Under that plan, the total catch by sport, commercial, and tribal fisheries is not expected to exceed 1 percent of the total amount of smelt returning this year.
Since only one of the four fishing days actually occurred while smelt were in the Cowlitz River, the additional day of dipping will fall within the planned level so the harvest is still expected to meet that expectation, Norman said.
"We're pleased to be able to give families another chance to enjoy harvesting smelt this year and help us get the information we need about this run," he said. "It's a win-win situation."

Here is the news release. Hope it helps so you don't have to click on links.

No problem. The muddy and high water will make them hug the bank and it will be lights out dipping just like last weekend. I already ate last weekends 5 lbs.. could have got 10 but did not think I needed that many. WRONG! I and several friends devoured the little critters. Hopefully I can get 10lbs this time.

UPDATE! I just looked at the river forecast for the Cowlitz at Kelso. Looks like it will hit almost 18 feet on Thursday. Not good. The places I like may be unfishable, the water may be too high. Color is not an issue, now finding a spot with the water 2-3 feet higher than last Saturday may be an issue. Don't think it will make that big of a deal however. Catching should be good.

I think Bobs has nets.

Gearhart gardens, Carnival market, and Castle rock area all have good areas. There are a tom of good spots all the way to castle Rock. Fishers lane is another one.

Behind the courthouse in Kelso too.

Does anybody know of any flat areas where I can take my three year old son to go enjoy this experience. The two popular places that I am familiar with are too steep for my son to stand on the bank. Any help will be appreciated. PM's welcomed

According to the article, Bob's sold out of nets. I need to find a net as well. I want to get in on this for the coming weekend. How much do the nets normally sell for?

Has anyone tested their smelt for radiation? I was on a Fukushima string and a few guys were concerned about the radiation from the 2011 Japanese nuclear plant disaster making its way to the west coast and into the salmon. Just curious if anyone is concerned about the smelt. I've done a little reading and everyone seems to be either "Dont worry about it" or "the sky is falling" hard to tell the truth. Maybe it's still to early.......

Might try Manchesters then. Not sure what they would go for. Guessing around $30 but could be way off.

We bought all the smelt nets Danielson had in stock, all 113 of them. Our price is 39.99. We had bought out the wholesalers as well.
I can tell you there were absolutely no replacement smelt nets anywhere to buy.

Since I plan on eating a Springer if I can catch one, I guess I'll tell the wife to cancel my doctors appointment to address my snoring. I'll tell her the latest cute is catching and eating more fish....... Thanks's for the suggestion. I'll post the pic of the 3 headed Chinook when I land it too, I just hope it doesn't blow up my transducer before I get the fish out of the water.

If the dipping is good i can't imagine you wouldn't be able to borrow a net. Last weekend it took longer to assemble the net than dip the limit...I'd have been happy to watch someone else use it.

Another vote for Gearhart. Good sand beaches, which will likely be underwater, and a good park for when junior gets bored.

held my gieger counter over my fish..just background radiation

my smelt from years ago were black inside as well

if you really want to know if the radiation made it here...go run a gieger counter past a seal..radiation accumulates in their fat

There were a few Tribal dippers at gerhardt Thursday evening getting them a foot off the boat launch. The Cowlitz is chocolate milk, but the smelt are practically swimming onto the bank. You could use a dixie cup & get a limit.

Anyone willing to give me directions to the carnival market, or possibly an address?

Just take the second longview exit. Turn left at the light after you exit the freeway. Follow that road up and over the river and turn right after the bridge. Follow the road along the river. Not shure of the distance but its not far. Youll see all the cars parked across the street from the market.hope this helps.

Kinda dropped the ball and didn't have time to get a smelt net. I've got a relatively fine-mesh salmon landing net that's about 4ft length. Think it'll do? Or is the extension really a necessity?

Duck tape and a broom stick might be the best make shift net you can make

A lot of lookers late this afternoon! I was one of them. Last weekend it was furbags and birds everywhere. Today, no birds, no seals no sea lions. However, the fish are there. Looks like another epic smelt dipping day in the AM. Sorry about the bad pic but the black looking things are smelt.

I will be at Carnival Market at 6 with CCW and our girls. I will have my scale and net if you need it. Just bring your own bucket.

Slept in till 8:00 and decided to take the smelt net and take a drive ending at Gearhardt. My wife and I limited quickly. It took us longer than others have posted but I was satisfied. We took the scale with us to make sure we didn't go over our total weight limit. They are vacuum packed and in the freezer waiting for a sturgeon trip - I weighed them as they were packed and we ended up with 19.96lbs.
