Re: Unclipped Release Technique Poll
I don't think you necessarily fight a fish until exhaustion, to tail it. Once we identify the adipose fin, the fish is usually tired enough to release with a pair of pliars.
I have noticed when it is ready to be netted, is about the same time that you can release it with a pair of pliars. I have not netted a wild fish for about a year. (Well, maybe a coho on accident...)
Doesn't work for everyone though.

... or release without tailing or use of a net.

Re: Unclipped Release Technique Poll
What method I am fishing with makes the difference for net or no net.
I will not release a fish on a Kwickfish without having them in the net. Way to easy to get a big trebble burried in your hand...trust me.
I do net, pull net tight against the boat, leave the fish in the water, remove hooks and roll them out of the net.
On bait, I'll either grab the hook with pliers or just cut the leader.

Re: Unclipped Release Technique Poll
Didn't vote on questions. I use 80lb braid mainline, 80lb mono leader. If the fish has an adipose fin we just yard it close enough to grab the leader. Then the 15" extractor rotates the hook and set the fish free. This occurs as we drift downstream with current after releasing anchor line.

Re: Unclipped Release Technique Poll
I didn't vote on your poll because it requires more choices. I fight the fish to the boat and can tell well before it gets there if it is a keeper or not. If I am unsure I assume it is a fish to release. If it is a releaser, I grab my leader with one hand and pop the hook out with the other.
IF the fish has been on to long I grab the fish by the tail with a glove and remove the hook. BTW, I wear glasses and still can tell if the fish is marked or not from about 20 feet from the boat and well before it is in netting range.

Re: Unclipped Release Technique Poll
Tyeebuster and Slabhunter- Thanks for your more exact answers, I realized while making the poll that there were of course, way too many combinations of techniques to make a question and or answer for all of them, so I only did the too basic questions. Tyeebuster- A lot of times I can feel like I can see whether it is clipped or not, and a few times it turned out that I just saw what I wanted to see. I think the more fish you look at the easier you can tell. A lot of the regular guys fishing down at Frenchmen's for instance, who may not have as good as eyesight as I, can spot whether it's clipped or not the first time the fish jumps, I can not always do this. Thanks everyone for Poll and other participation!

Unclipped Release Technique Poll
This is my first poll. In light of Lured Ins post on releasing springers, and the best ways to do it, I decided to make this poll.
