Fish hooked three times in half hour
Never thought I would see something like this but on a recent fishing trip with my two sons we each hooked the same fish.
First time - Youngest son already has a fish on the bank and it's early so he hooks another hatchery fish. He wants to keep fishing and so he decides to release this fish which is hooked deeply enough to warrant cutting the line and leaving the hook in place.
Second time - My other son then hooks a fish and amazingly it's the exact same fish with my other son's hook in place. He also decides to release this fish which is a nice little hatchery buck with just a hint of red.He also leaves his hook with orange yarn in the fish as it is once again hooked deeply.
Third time - The old man's turn! I hook a fish and we are joking about what if that's the same fish. My oldest son is ready to net this fish and he yells "Dad it's that same fish!" This fish has some kind of death wish and so I decide it time for the old "wood shampoo" and I punch the fish.
I'm sure some of you have had similiar experiences but this was a first for me...truly amazing.

Re: Fish hooked three times in half hour
We hooked into the same shaker twice within an hour(recognized hook mark). Guess it wanted that multiple piercing punk look.

Re: Fish hooked three times in half hour
WOW, never 3 times in a row.....A couple years ago 3 of us were fishing Trask tidewater and one friend lost a good one in an anchor rope. About 15 min. later, my other friend hooks a good one and upon netting, it had the first rig in it's mouth. As perscribed it got the "wood shampoo" also.
By the way BOTH times the corkies were IN it's mouth.....They do EAT corkies, soaked in scent.

Re: Fish hooked three times in half hour
we've hooked the same bass within a minute of release. I was fishing from the bow, caught and released but when I released the bass I accidentally broke the hook off right at the knot. A minute later my buddy fishing from the stern catches the same fish, removes both hooks and sets him free.

Re: Fish hooked three times in half hour
Once upon a time I was "experimenting" with some really inexpensive monofilament. It "looked" just about like Maxima Chameleon, so I gave it a try in 8-lb. test.
I was working a brass spoon through a riffle on the lower Wilson when a steelhead struck. What I thought was an entirely reasonable hookset resulted in a broken line, lost steelhead, and lost spoon. :depressed:
I tied on another spoon, and continued down the run.
Ten minutes later, I was 100 feet downriver, swinging my spoon behind an especially fishy-looking boulder when I got another strike. This time the line held and I eventually landed a hen of about seven pounds.
When I got her to the bank, however, there was my spoon in the corner of her jaw -- and my other spoon in the other corner of her jaw.

Although I suppose some sort of award was due for the safe return of my spoon, this steelhead was rewarded by geing bonked on the head.
By the way, I eventually decided that the lline I was trying had good strength on a steady pull, but wasn't at all fond of a sudden jerk. End of test.

How funny.

Re: Fish hooked three times in half hour
Never did it with a steelhead but one time we caught a shaker six times in a day of fishing. We knew it was the same one because he had some leader coming out, well his rear end to say it nice. That little guy was hungry because he would just slam the bait.

Re: Fish hooked three times in half hour
My Dad and I have both gotten a single fish multiple times (mine in the same hole both times, his a ways apart), but all on different days--never back to back (to back) like that. Wow.

Re: Fish hooked three times in half hour
Not sure I can beat this, but maybe a tie?
Little Sue (Susitna) River AK... Silver fishing was HOT! Sitting eggs on the bottom (tidewater) with a corkie just waiting for the schools to come through and pick up the baits. Challenge was to hook the fish lite (keeping only bleeders/deep hooked fish and ones 12-15 lbs or up), get em in quick for release and get back in the water for another one or two (before the school ran by you and the bite dies).
Wait 15 minutes, another school and it starts all over.
Anywho..in the middle of all this I picked up a fish, bud next to me in the boat says, I got one too about milli-second later. A few seconds after that we are... Oh Oh, I think we're tangled up here. Our lines are tracking together all over the river. Finally get that fish up to the boat and....ha.. it's my fish, I can see my corkie, yarn and bait just inside the mouth.
Then the fish opens his mouth wider and we can see Larry's rig a little farther down!
We both caught the same fish at the same time! Gotta love those hungry Silvers!

Re: Fish hooked three times in half hour
Miss B beat me to it,
A buddy and I were sidedrifting for steelhead a couple of years ago and we had one eat both baits, we both set the hook at the same time, obviously one of us was a little slow at recognizing the bite! I think it was me that day, the guide kept yelling "Jerk!" not sure if he wanted me to set the hook.....or just didn't like me????
Great stories!

Re: Fish hooked three times in half hour
Was backtrolling on the Sandy w/ Jack Glass. My rod all of the sudden went slack and I thought I had hung up on the bottom. Then my dad's pole slams down! One second later my reel starts screaming. Nice little 22lbs salmon picked up my lure and just kept on going and hit my dads. Was a real mess as the fish kept going from one side of the boat to the other. Was kind of fun though.

Re: Fish hooked three times in half hour
Remember the pic in STS of Eric Linde holding a springer with two plugs in it's mouth?
On our ranch, a large pond with a creek that ran through my dad liked to C&R trout. He had one he named "Rerun" because he caught it multiple times one day. He landed Rerun just about every day he fished one summer.

Re: Fish hooked three times in half hour
I once saw a Springer landed 5 times in a hour at the church camp hole on the South Santiam. The last guy led the fish about 200 yards down stream and released it again, the fish then appeared to be heading upstream to the hole again.By then it was getting late and we left the hole.

Re: Fish hooked three times in half hour
fishingfirst,
A freind and I had the exact same thing happen, I was the slow one.
Another time I was at the guardrail hole on the Salmon plunking eggs when I had a buck chinook grab my eggs. I landed him and he was a boot so after a period of reviving him he went swimming up stream and bit the next guy in lines bait within 30 seconds of being out of my hands.
He didn't swim off quite as strongly the second time.

Re: Fish hooked three times in half hour
Two of us were fishing out of a canoe on Hood Canal, dropping herring over the side to see what we could catch. Of course, dogfish is what we caught. When I was reeling in the dog my partner reeled in his line to be out of the way and assist in landing/releasing my dogfish. He left his pole tip over the front of the canoe with the herring dangling in the water.
We released my dogfish and it swam directly to the front of the canoe and struck the other herring.

Re: Fish hooked three times in half hour
Back in the fall of 1991 I had a good bobber bite going in tidewater of the Trask. You had to pick threw a few dark fish each day, but we could alway's end up with a couple of good bright fish.
One day one of my clients hooks and lands a big dark fish, in it's mouth were 3 other hooks with short pieces of mono attached. I recognized the fish because 2 of the hooks in it's mouth were mine.
In Alaska Silver fishing, I had a couple of different clients land the same fish at the same time while drifting egg's. And catching the same fish a couple of times a day was not uncommon on silvers and chinnok.
Who say's catch and release doesn't work???

A steelhead broke me off and 15 minutes later the guy fishing next to me caught that fish and returned my spinner. I thought that pretty odd until reading some of these posts.

Re: Fish hooked three times in half hour
I caught a beautiful native fish last year behind the Guide Shop on the Wilson. I released it safely and about 15 minutes later a guy down river from me caught an identical fish. I'm pretty certain it was the same.
Seems like when they're destine to feed there's no stoping them.

Re: Fish hooked three times in half hour
On the Rogue River near Medford when the summer steelhead reach the hatchery they take however many they need to spawn. After this they collect the fish returning to the hatchery and punch the gill plate with a hole punch. They then transport the fish via truck down river to let folks fish for them again. These fish are referred to as retreads.
I've witnessed a fish caught just below Touvelle Park outside Medford with 3 hole punches in the gill plate. That would make the fish a 4 time retread to the hatchery and back.

Re: Fish hooked three times in half hour
Ive caughtthe same steelhead twice in a day a couple different times. I also caught a chinook twice in 3 casts while bobber fishing in tide water. Stupid fish only had 1 eye.
I saw the same steelhead caught 4 times one day on the south Santiam. I know it was the same fish because it had a sore on its back. I caught it the first and third time, the fourth time it was caught it was bonked.

Re: Fish hooked three times in half hour
On this very day, yes today, I was trout fishing a pond with my son and his friend. Floating powerbait off the bottom. I watch my sons pole tip start dancing and yell at him to quit looking for newts and reel in his fish. Just before he picks up his pole, my pole starts dancing and I set the hook and start reeling. He says his fish is off but as I reeled in the fish, his line was coming too. Pulled the fish out of the water and the trout had got to both our baits. Both hooks buried deep. Never seen that before.
So we tossed it on the bank and the two kids took turns giving it the ol' "wood shampoo"

Re: Fish hooked three times in half hour
About 30 years ago, I was fishing with my Dad on the Snohomish River. We were anchored out and plunking for steelies.
We were fishing double hookups, eggs on top, spin-n-glow on the bottom. I had a takedown and played a nice little buck. He had taken the eggs. My Dad was about to net it, when another metalhead took the bobber. I had a spunky fish on the bottom bobber and a tired one on the top. By the time the bottom fish got tired out, the top fish was rested and off we went again. It was hillarious. All the time I was playing these fish, we were saying..Who is ever gonna believe this. It went back and forth for a few minutes and then Dad netted both of them at the same time. My Dad reminded me of this incident until the day he died.
Thanks for reminding me of this great memory of fishing with my Dad.
