Any info on Westport Albies?
Anybody heard anything on tuna out of Westport? The coastwatch SST hasn't shown any local temps for awhile. My bait tank is longing for a couple scoops of hot 'chovies!
Thanks in advance for any info!
Scott

Re: Any info on Westport Albies?
Scott, I was in Westport last week and ran into a few guys that were doing good on the fish but they were still having to run about 35 miles. Don't know if that's changed, please post if you hear anything, too bad about the sst.

Re: Any info on Westport Albies?
Thanks for the response, Chaps. It's hard planning a tuna trip up here with a lack of information. The last 2 years I was able to look at the SST info... and knowing where they were getting 'em down South in OR, knew where to look.
Sure miss the info pipeline from So. Cal. Hopefully we'll get a network of current info up here some day.

Re: Any info on Westport Albies?
Scott,
See my post about the storm! Before the storm, we were setting at 43 miles, basically out front of Westport. Afterwords, the satellite imagery shows a change! Colder water, looks like the warm stuff might have moved out a bit but with a better edge, out to 45 miles or so! The bait we had was AWESOME, even kept most of it alive through the storm, just to bad we did not get to fish it! I keep up with whats happeing at Westport all the time so feel free to ask for info! Good fishing! Brian

Re: Any info on Westport Albies?
Hello,
My Name is Mike Brogdon and I have recently joined this forum to learn and share information about boats and the big blue. My wife at times considers me possesed as my whole world seems to be connected to boats or fishing in one way or another. I am the designer/production manager at Almar Boats in Tacoma, and the wife and I fish Neah bay from mid May thru the end of September. We have a 24' boat with a volvo diesel. I am trying to introduce myself and respond to a inquiry all at once.
Every August we take our boat to Westport in search of Tuna. True to tradition we trailered our boat down to Westport on Thursday night knowing that the forecast for Friday was not good. By the time we got the boat in the water it was around 11:00pm and there was not a breath of wind. Went to bed and woke up the next morning to what I would consider winter storm conditions, the waves were breaking over the jetty and we had a very relaxing day in Westport doing the tourist thing. The weather forecast for Saturday was promising so we went to bed Friday night with great excpectations of what Saturday could bring. Woke up Saturday around 4:30am and proceeded to cross the bar to find the seas still a little troubled from the day before but NO WIND. Given that the forecast was showing conditions to improve as the day went on we kept pushing on. I had a waypoint set around the 125 line given this is were we had taken fish in the previous years and I did not have much else to go on as the satelite shots had not been that good. Once we reached the 125 line a little south of Westport around 40 miles out, the water temp had only reached 58 degrees. At this point the water had improved quite a bit from are departure and we decided to take a due west heading until we came across some warm water. 10 miles went by and the temp started to rise, now at 62. We trhu the gear in and within 5 minutes one rod went off, got him just a 13 pound peanut. Approx 15 minutes later saw what appeared to be jumpers 1/8 of a mile ahead, I told the wife to put her gloves on as I had the feeling it was about to happen. 2 minutes later we had 4 on. Fired the boat up again and within 1 minute had 3 more. The conditions improved as the day went on and we ended up approx. 55 miles out of Westport in 69 degree water with 25 fish. It was another great day on the big blue and I have to be the luckiest guy in the world to have a wife that I can share these type of experiences with before I get to old, not to sure my body will be able to tolerate this kind of enjoyment much longer. TUNA FISHING IS HARD WORK.

Re: Any info on Westport Albies?
SST shows some very good shots as of this afternoon.
I'm not sure where Westport is at , but from Grays Harbor, you'd be looking at a 45 mile run just to get to 60 degree water. It starts at about 46.30 / 125.00 north of Astoria Canyon, or just northeast of there at 46.40 / 125.10
It's not looking to great for you guys right now. Let this wind tidey up our ocean and see if we can get some real good temp breaks.

Re: Any info on Westport Albies?
Maryal,
Thanks for the post. I am most interested in TUNA! prospects out of Westport.
I believe you and I met at Blake Island 2 years ago when you were surveying boat (SeaSport) owners about design ideas for your new 24' hardtop aluminum job.

Slabquest
I believe we may have met, probably at Neah Bay. I did spend some time talking to the people that fish the ocean about what they would be looking for in a 22' to 26' aluminum OffShore boat.
As far as tuna, we left our boat at the dock in Westport and will be shooting for a Friday morning run. As you are probably well aware of, this type of entertainment is very contagious.

Re: Any info on Westport Albies?
The latest Terrafin shot puts the break about 50 miles off Westport. Not much better off of the CR buoy either. The break is about 35 miles off Newport and maybe only 30 miles off Depoe Bay. However, the break is only 12 miles offshore of Coos Bay!!! Road Trip???
