Default Good teaching drift on Sandy?

Looking to get my stepson out steelheading during the next few days on the Sandy so he can try out his new rod and reel. Can some of you give me some guidance as to where a good "beginner" drift is to take him to (not too snaggy but holds a few fish)?

Oxbow Park....behind Camp Collins...park in the small lot with the flood plain sign and walk about 500 yards. Also the tail out of the Hosner Drift a 1/2 mile further upriver.

Start at Lewis and Clark Park and work your way upriver to Dabney. There is some great water in there and not too bad of access.

Good luck!!

I would take SandyRiverRon's advice. Pay for access to Oxbow plus the fact you have to walk more than ten feet from your car means you won't be in a crowd. It is a great drift, a couple hundred yards worth, and more times than not I've had it all to myself. And more times than not I've either hooked fish or saw others hook fish in this drift.

To get there, go into Oxbow and pull into the first parking area on your left after the pay gate (called the Flood Plain Trail). Take the trail down to the right. At some point you will see an offshoot trail to your left that descends down into a channel with a couple feet of water and then into a big opening. Take that trail and head straight across the opening towards the river bank. If you get to a point where there are big log piles obstructing your path, just walk further downstream to get around them easily (and remember the log piles as the point to start heading back to find your trail home). I've seen fish caught everywhere from the head to the tail of this long drift. Have fun and post pictures
