How big is this steelie? (pic)
I found this picture on KATU's Fish Tales website. Just wondering what other people's guesses were as to its weight(it is posted on their site, but I am not going to post it). Here is the info on the picture:
The kid is 50" tall and weighs 60 lbs.
Nice fish!
***Note: this is unfortunately, NOT ME :depressed: , just an interesting photo I found on the web***
*Check out KATU Fish Tales website for the whole story (its from 1/13/04), I'd post a link but I don't know if it would pass with teh Mods*

Saw that on the news. They said it was 37lbs. Don't know if I'd go that far but it is a DANDY!

Re: How big is this steelie? (pic)
I'd say anywhere between 25-30 lbs. on the upper end. Caught a lot of salmon in that range and it looks like about that body size. Regardless, that is one big fish.

Re: How big is this steelie? (pic)
Looks a little "fishy" to me. Look at the width of the fish compared to the width of the kid - almost the same size  . Also look at the width of the fish just before the tail compared to the kids knee - bigger than the knee  . If that kid is 50" tall and 60# that fish is a record. Not to mention if it was dark and you took a picture with a flash and were holding the fish in front of you, wouldn't there be a shadow somewhere ? Maybe it's real but I'm with Keta on this one.

Re: How big is this steelie? (pic)
I saw part of the story on the news. Note that they are both dressed in shorts and t-shirts. Pretty much a big hint it wasn't last week!!! What is the record steelie anyhow??? I always thought it was around 35??? I have seen some bigger ones but they came out of nets and were supposed to have been released, yah, right!!!

Re: How big is this steelie? (pic)
I have a picture of a fish my grandfather caught in the early 80's above McNary. The picture is close to the same. His fish went 24 lbs and 43inches.
I'd say the fish is 25 lbs and 43inches.

Don't think it's 37lbs, but it's in the upper 20's for sure. That is a dandy fish!

Guess you just have to admire that it is one big steelhead no matter how much it weighed. Thanks for sharing the picture.

Yes ajfishfinder,
The state record is 35 & change, I wish this guy could have gotten it on a real scale. I know I sure would if I had a potential new state record!

Re: How big is this steelie? (pic)
Heck ya I'm jealous  . I still think it doesn't look right though. Just my opinion. If it is real then . I'm just looking at the size of the fish compared to the kid. Only reason I question it is it was stated the kid is 50" and 60#. The fish looks almost as big as the kid. That would have to be a 40#+ fish unless it's an optical illusion. Again, if it's real .

I just a caught a 18 pounder and it pails in comparison to this one. Bet that is an Idaho B fish from the Lower Columbia.

Re: How big is this steelie? (pic)
The kid is standing toe to toe with the man. The fish is about a foot closer to the camera than the kid. The tail is about 6 inches off the ground. Nose(fish) to nose(kid). 6 inches between kids nose and the top of his head. So my geuss would have to be 38" and 18 lbs.

Re: How big is this steelie? (pic)
If the kid is 50" tall then the fish appears to be 40" to 42" long. That would put the weight somewhere in the 20 to 22 pound range. I really doubt it would weigh much more than that. Really nice fish though.

 I would say around 27-29 pounds! Hey Ty, I agree with you. It looks like a Clearwater fish from Idaho! Every season there is a few that size caught over there.

Re: How big is this steelie? (pic)
This is definitely a nice fish...I think it is close to the 20# mark.
I have seen a 26#+ fish a friend caught and when he held the fish at his waist the tail was laying on the ground and my friend is 6'3"+. This fish has about the same girth as that 26#'r but is lacking length.
I also handed my rod (w/fish) off to a friend on the Bogey one day in WA and 45 minutes later he landed a 23# buck. It was about the same length as the fish in this pic but had significantly more girth.

Mid to upper 20's.
Looks like one of those toad Quinault Brats that come back about now.
Check out Letty's site - click on the Photo of the Day. You'll see some similar looking fish.
