Well these arent fresh sheds but my daughter just gave me a skull mount the other day so I figured I would mount my favorite pair on it. Here is the ATL pic

And here is the mounted pic

I still have another set from this same buck that are 5x6 but not as fresh as these were so I chose these.

Been out fer about 8 hours so far this past week with no luck down in Southern Oregon. Have seen a couple bucks with one antler. I have only found one piece of an old antler, but I have been runnin' with my 2 yr old and 6 month old.

Couple weeks should be a bit better. I want to find a few freshies this year.

My advice is to wait till end of February or early March. Going out now you run into the very likely possibility of running bucks still packing out of the area. Good luck on finding fresh horns this year

Good point Cascader. I have read a lot of posts about shed hunting in the past few weeks, and they mentioned that. Hadn't even thought about that until I jumped a 3 point out of a blackberry patch the other day. Wife saw a real nice three point with one side so I just been jonesin'!

I've found two fresh ones so far this year on 1/5/14. I live in the valley. I believe the bucks around here and the coast range drop quite a bit earlier than the cascade bucks. Lookin forward to findin more......

Nice find! Looks a touch on the moldy side........may wanna git rid of it!

Have you folks noticed many "new" rubs during shed season? What I mean is do deer rub much to remove their antlers like elk seem to do?

Sometimes...Sometimes not. It's kind of a crap shoot really. Or it depends upon your definition of close I know that sometimes they drop them right by each other and other times they'll pack the remaining one for days even a couple weeks. Alot of variation in that I think.

Lack of snow is going to make it hard for me this year. I don't think my normal go to areas will be holding bucks. My guess is that they didn't or haven't yet come down as low as they normally do. There is usually 2 or 3' of snow right now. As of last Sunday there isn't even a snowflake! I guess I'll be scouting some new areas. Hopefully this year the pooch carries his weight. He did well last year for only being a few months old (found 3 if I remember correctly). This thread has me jacked up! I'll be out this weekend fo sho!!

Heading back up this morning to see if I can find the other side, hopefully it was heavy enough for him to knock it off.
I dont think he would want to walk around lop sided for too long.

I personally have never found an elk shed while looking for blacktail sheds. I should disclose that I am TERRIBLE at finding elk sheds. I've been out a lot of times and only found one spike antler. Last year's thread mentioned a lot of elk sheds being found in drainage areas. That's where I found the one that I did find.

I agree, elk sheds are much rarer than deer sheds for me. The farmer I hunt with typically finds an elk shed or two in his field every winter...

I found this one on Sunday:

Then as I was trying to get another pic a freaking squatch ran in between me and the shed! Here is definitive proof that squatch is 1) real, 2) bold and 3) trying to steal sheds from innocent shed hunters.

All the bucks in my neck of the woods (Cascades) are still packing. Saw the 2nd and 3rd biggest bucks of my life on Saturday. Didn't find any sheds. I'll say it again, with the lack of snow, this is going to be a difficult year.

I have been keeping tabs on a big group of deer this winter near my trail cam. Haven't seen any missing antlers yet but thought I would go hiking anyways. About 5 minutes after I got to where I wanted to be I saw my dog coming back with the 3 point in his mouth. About 5 minutes and 150 yards away I saw him stop and pick up the little 4 point side.

Not bad for the first 10 minutes of shed hunting for the year. Didn't find any thing else though.

All the other bucks I saw were still packing.

Really lucky start to the year!
Found a shed while duck hunting- very small one from last year
Then went out last weekend for 3 hours found the second shed- a decent 4 point white tail (and a forky deadhead/ 4x4 deadhead)
Today I got out for 3 hours and found five more
The last two I didn't post was a big but old and chalky fork and horn and a fresh this year small forky

Would you guys be kind enough to point a guy to some reading about where and how to find shed antlers.
I spent a lot of time in the woods this last season and found no sheds. But found a cat kill carcass, a elk skull, and some other animal remains. But no previous season sheds.
Thanks.

I too spend a lot of days looking for sheds but no luck. I know there were some around because the guy I was with found 4. Will the lack of snow move the bucks to new wintering grounds to where you normally find sheds you will not find any this year?

I love being in the hills looking for sheds and stump shooting.
My dog Whoopie has learned to find them as well.
Big question is :
What do you do with them once you pack them home?
I like to keep matched pairs of 130 +class Blacktail sheds but I would like to know is there some place where I can sell sheds?
I was told once that they slice them in wafer thin slices and they are sold to Asian markets.
I would think that they also have value to crafters.
The rosettes make really nice belt buckles and you can scrimshaw on them as well, after you polish the crown.
Do any of you guys know of where I can sell sheds?

Thanks

Big question is :
What do you do with them once you pack them home?
I like to keep matched pairs of 130 +class Blacktail sheds but I would like to know is there some place where I can sell sheds?
I was told once that they slice them in wafer thin slices and they are sold to Asian markets.
I would think that they also have value to crafters.
The rosettes make really nice belt buckles and you can scrimshaw on them as well, after you polish the crown.
Do any of you guys know of where I can sell sheds?

Thanks
Hawk Wing
You can find buyers online and get 5-10 dollars a pound for fresh sheds. I believe you may need some sort of license to sell them. I think its pretty cheap probably a standard business license. I've looked into it a little. If you search the net you should be able to figure it out.

I spent a lot of time in the woods this last season and found no sheds. But found a cat kill carcass, a elk skull, and some other animal remains. But no previous season sheds.
Thanks.
You need to be looking in an area bucks winter. I don't have a good recipe. I find a few every year, but I can't say I know where I will find them. They seemed to be lost randomly. I frequently hunt deer that don't migrate. I look on south slopes near where I have seen bucks previously. I find them in timber/clearcuts/meadows, etc.

I once glassed a shed up in a clearcut.

I'm sure there are sheds to be found in any of the parks in PDX. Try Washinton Park. You'll have to work areas away from the walking paths.
