Default NOT the newby post I was hoping to make...

After months of looking at ifish during lunch with my co-workers (co-lurkers?) I finally regitered this past Saturday for my moniker and password. Sunday, I went fishing at Eagle Creek off of Dowty Road where one of my co-workers had just caught his first steelhead. I was hoping to catch one myself, which I could relate in a good newby story. Unfortunatly, all I got was my car broken into, with a bunch of gear stolen. I am offering rewards for return of the gear and/or arrest of the person(s) responsible - please see the Lost or Stolen Property Listing for details. I'm not going to get on a soapbox here, just say how amazed I am that I can live in New Orleans, the petty crime capital of the country, for 15 years without ever being ripped off, only to get robbed here in Oregon. Oh well, I'm not going to let it get me down too much. Non Illigitimi Corborundum. Keep on fishing. Hope I haven't bummed anyone out too much. I'll try to post a better newby post soon.

Thievery is just one of those things that you roll the dice on for every fishing trip you take. It's a drag but that's the risk you take. I don't take any more gear with me than I'm going to carry with me on the water.

I got really skittish about it after getting my rig broken into up at Marmot a few years ago. There are some places I won't fish now. Yeah, that means I might miss out on some good fishing but getting my rig broken into isn't worth the greatest fishing out there.

I am sorry to hear about your stuff getting stolen. I know how ticked you get when you walk up to your vehicle to find you have gotten ripped off. But dont let it get you down. In the long run, the only thing lost is the thiefs integrity. On a different note, how long ago did you move to oregon?

As I walked away from my vehicle at the exact same place today I had a vibe that I might come back to see glass on the ground...just seemed "thief-y". Had that vibe at a lot of spots these days...more than usual. I think I am gonna get a Rottweiler or something to leave in the Jeep

Its really sad when I get my fishing gear all ready the night before and then load my 40. I have been hit at my home 2 times in 3 months and I live in what I thought was a safe neighborhood, am having an alarm put in today, won't stop them but maybe will get in a couple shots on there way out. Sorry to hear about your loss but can really relate, between the hunting gear and the Raptor has cost me around 8 to 10 thousand. Ray

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helvetica">We moved here last February. I had visited Oregon back in '85 to fish the Deschutes with my Dad, and it stuck in my mind that this would be a good place to live. I'm only sorry it took me this long to get here. Not that living in New Orleans or SoCal was so bad, but it's hard to beat the combination of recreational opportunities and lifestyle Oregon provides.

Sorry to hear about the misfortune. I have lived in Oregon for over 30 years, and last year was the first time that I had my truck broken into. My lesson learned? Don't leave anything in the cab that is in view, so there is nothing for them to steal. No guarantee that they won't break in, after all think about the type of person(s) that are doing this sort of thing(not too bright)........as the comedian Bill Engvall would say "here's their sign". Here's to many happy and successful outings for you! And welcome to God's country.

That sucks about your gear. After my car being broken into on the olympic coast years back I alway make sure that the car is clean and there isn't anything inside that could entice someone to break in. Hopefully it doesn't happen to you again.

I seem to here lots of stories about break ins at eagle creek. I wonder whats it is about that place?

I think it has to do with the fact that you are generally not within sight of your vehicle.

Thanks for the warm welcome. The going theory here at work is that as we speak, the toothless and mentally impaired jerk who stole my stuff is tossing the broken shards of my once-beautiful Winston 5-weight into the woods, ****ed that it didn't hold up to the 6 ounces of lead he was trying to chuck...sigh.

I have had my rig broken into several times so installed a alarm with a blinking light on the dash board. Since I have installed the alarm haven't had a break in. Believe they will go to a vehicle they know isn't alarmed before they will tackle one with a alarm. And the horn would allert you to a break in if you are within hearing range.

Yikes! A Winston 5wt.?! Why didn't you say so sooner... let's get a posse and get huntin. Anyhow, welcome aboard.
This won't help anyone get their goods back, but here's a story of a thief that didn't fare so well. My brother's college roommate had his car stereo stolen twice (this was before car alarms). The technique in those days was to pry it from the front while someone stuck their hands behind the stereo and pushed it forward. Bet that third thief was surprised to find the razor blades welded to the back. Ouch!

About this time last year I parked at Barton and got in a friends boat. I was really nervous leaving my truck parked in the empty lot. I thought I carefully locked the doors, then figured who whould want anything in my old beater anyhow??? When we returned 4-5 hours later, what a surprise. Not only had I left the passenger side door unlocked, but it wasn't even closed all the way. I remember going back to get my license, but like a fool had left my wallet laying right in the seat. Luckily no dirtbags had come along that day. Unbelievable, I guess I beat the odds!!! You can bet it will never happen again either.

Man this is scaring the hell out of me. I go fishing with at least seven rods and reals and at least one large tackle box. I guess the next step is to get a pitbull or badger to keep in the truck. It amazees me that low life scum like that get away with it. Were are they selling it, and what can be done to put a stop to it. One of them is going to hurt if they get caught.

Sorry to hear of your loss.

I hope you reported the incident. So many times people don't take the time to report crimes. This is the only way law enforcement can see patterns and then act on them.

Don't let this incident keep you from going again. Get right back out there and go fishing.

Okey Dokey?

I also think that we need to make it a part of our normal fishing routine to keep an eye out. If we see people in the area that arnt fishing, we need to take note. If people are meandering about, or look supicious, just write down license plate time and date, note where you are, just write down a brief description of what is going on. The best way to prevent things like this from happening too often are by people being pro-active. I am not telling anyone to start pulling guns on strangers, just if we can all think to pay attention to what is gonig on around where we are, it could save us and fellow sportsmen from getting victimized.

sorry to hear about you stuff being stolen. we had our car broken into twice at willow bar on sauvies island while fishing. we did flag down a state policeman and filed a report. if you do file a report, you can make a claim against your homeowners insurance for the contents stolen and against your auto insurance for the damage to the vehicle (if the dollar values justify the claim. they most likely are going to hock them, sell them or trade them for drugs. you might want to check with the pawn shops in the area. they might turn up..... good luck
