Default Outgoing really? KP

Did a little research and some of you said to fish the kelly point area on an outgoing tide for sturgeon. Is this right? Making my first trip up that way in the next couple of days and don't really want to do it wrong. I've done 100% of my boat fishing below longview. So this is new ground to me. Any other thoughts for the kelly point area will be very much appreciated. Am I restricted to just the columbia with a wa license?

Thanks
Kris

I've caught plenty of fish on an incoming tide around KP (although I do a little better on outgoing). It just seems to take more work to locate them, once you do you will be into fish. The problem usually is that during slack tide or incoming, its often tough to keep the boat from moving around (not enough current to make sea anchors work). The slightest amount of wind or waves moves ya around. This makes it tough to see the bite. Running a kicker in reverse can help keep you steady, but the vibration of the motor can make the rods twitch pretty good if in a rod holder.

When I can plan in advance I choose a day with an outgoing for most of the day. When I just feel like going, I just go.

Sometimes in the winter or spring when the water is high you will always have water moving out just below Kelley Point near the shipping lane. Just because the ebb isn't until the afternoon doesn't mean that there will not be enough current to stay straight.

What usually happens is when the tide starts to run out, the sturgeon will pile into the deeper holes or slots to stay out of the main current and let food come to them.

When the tide slacks off, the sturgeon will leave the slots and start feeding back on the flats and general river bottom. During a slack or "flood" tide in the Portland area, fish the 40 to 50 foot zone and stay away from the deep slots.

Just because the tide isn't ebbing doesn't mean the fishing can't be good. You just have to think outside the box a little

yep, what TB said. You can fish both and still do well. An outgoing generally just helps keep the scent moving, bringing in more fish, keeps the boat and gear where it should be. I personally like current under the boat. That's just the best scenario for me though. But if slack is all you can fish on a given day, go for it. You can catch fish in both slack and outgoing though.
Best of luck to you out there.
