Default Clear water idea

Here's a pic of a clear water presentation idea I've been playing around with. Haven't got to try it yet, but I'll let you know how it works.

Basically, you just tie up your normal leader on a smaller hook (size 2 or 4).

Pull the leader back through the eye.

Put on a small corkie and slide down.

Now, thread the leader back through the eye of the hook. This catches the corkie between the knot and the eye of the hook basically making it ride on the back of the hook.

Next, take a marabou feather in your choice of color and wet down the stem, then feed it through the hole in the corkie til it comes out the other end and you have the desired length sticking out the back.

Trim off the marabou at the front.

Note: You may have to play with the thickness of the marabou stem versus the size of the hole in the corkie to get the proper fit so it will stay put.

I think it will work great. It has the floatabilty of the small corkie, the soft action of the marabou feathers, and the corkie on the back should allow you to use a smaller hook as the gap is not impaired. Can be made into a nice, small presentation for those low, clear flows.

I realize this may be more than some people want to bother with, but you can make these at home and have them spooled up in your Pips ready to go.

What do you all think?

Mike

Looks good , Why not. I bet it will catch fish. I bet it would work even in dirty water given the right colors.

It really looks great!!! Looks like it would catch fish.
The only thing I see that might be a problem is the line breaking near the back of the corkie due to the line having to bend backwards to go through the corkie. It might cut right through the corkie also.
But to let you know, I will try it... it looks great. "FISH-ON"

yarndog,

I agree on the line angle at the back. I think you can significantly decrease it by adding a few more wraps on your egg knot. This would make the length of the loop longer. Thanks for the input.

You could substitute a tuft of yarn out the back of the corkie as well which would hold some scent, but I like the idea of the slight action you would get with the marabou.

I've been attaching marabou to hook/corkie combos for a few years.
I've been in crowd conditions enough to notice that it seems to outfish the corkie/yarn combos.
But then again I may have just been putting it in the right spot.
Steelhead are not terribly picky.

I think it looks great! I actually saw Terry Mulkey tie up a very similar set-up at steelhead seminar last winter.

I agree with the others on the line angle and how it may break. However, I would rather be hooking lots of fish and trying to solve a line breaking problem than not hooking fish at all.

good luck!

Try squirting a SMALL amount of super glue at the back of the corkie to hold the marabou in place. You are on to something here...

Mojo,

That's actually what I did, but squirted it on the front where it barely sticks out after trimming.

Mike, that looks GREAT. I agree with adding more loops to your egg knot to cut down on the angle. The super glue could be a winner for holding the marabou in. If it's low water, the corky should be pretty small so the angle shouldn't be a problem by adding more wraps.

I tied another and added about 5 or 6 wraps and it fixed it. There is now an slight slant forward with the leader instead of it having to angle back.

This one was a black corkie with hot pink marabou and it looks killer.

Can you make one look like a blue or green pirate? How about Michael Jackson with a red butt? Oh, that's after jail time!

I can do the Pirates colors, but I'd have to pass on making one look like Miss Jackson.

To make one resemble him it would have to be a larger size corkie chasing a couple smaller corkies up the line.

I like it. It has the bouyancy of the corkie with the movement of marabou. This kind of combination could make the difference in a clear water situation with picky fish.

Sometimes I fish flies with drift gear. I mainly do this for Clack springers later in the season when they have seen lots of gear. The only problem I've ran into was losing flies on the bottom so I started tying them with a strip of foam in the body. The added bouyancy helps keep the fly in the strike zone where the marabou can do it's thing.

looks great, have you had any problems with the sharp edge of the corkie chaffing the line, I file down the corkies smooth, but notice that after temp snagging the lure on the bottom etc somtimes the corkie gets some sharp edges....that is if I ever get snagged it might happen..hahaha
