Slinky Question
I've only made a few slinkies before and was wondering what size shot does everyone use on a daily basis. Regular or Mag. Thanks

Re: Slinky Question
I use .210 shot. i think it's in the middle as far as size goes. I stick with one weight shot for almost all my slinkies. it helps make it easier for me to get to that perfect weight for the drift i'm fishing.
cb

Re: Slinky Question
I used the .210 also. I took a few of them to the post office so I could figure out how many weighed an oz., then divided the number down for 1/2, 1/4, etc. Good Luck!

Re: Slinky Question
I prefer the smaller ones, as the longer the slinkie the less it hangs up. In my humble opinion any way.

Re: Slinky Question
I've used as large as the .240, but like the .210 the best.

Re: Slinky Question
I have always made mine in consecutive numbers instead of skipping. I have found that sometimes that one last piece of lead will help get a better drift IMHO.

Re: Slinky Question
I use the .210 size.
I have a rock about 6" long and 4" wide, 1" thick that I make my slinkys on. I use a BBQ lighter and sharp scissors. I melt the cord then squash the end with the side of the lighter.
I make everything from 3 thru 13.
I use a plastic see through box from Shimano (Walmart) that I buy for $2.69.
I replenish the box several times through-out the season.
Works well for me.

Re: Slinky Question
I like to use a candle flame instead of a lighter. You only have to light it once.

Re: Slinky Question
>>>I like to use a candle flame<<<
That is the way to go. Been doing it for years.
Back in 93' I was living in a duplex in Cornelius and my room mate and I were making slinkies one night and got a visit from WA County deputies.
The neighbors thought we we making drugs of some sort and called it in.
We had a good laugh over that and sent one of the deputies home with some slinkies.

Re: Slinky Question
I liek to make them with surgical tubing and use all size numbers of shot from .21-.35 and use all numbers of shot in consecutive orders. Rubber give it a grabby feel instead of the cord fish bite feel.

Re: Slinky Question
I do two sizes. The difference is I get the rolls of lead, straighten it out and shove it into the slinky material. Make sure to bunch the material up. I have two soldering irons. One flat and one with a point. (thanx Rich). Burn the end. take some dull wire cutters, and pinch off pieces to match the size of BB's. Once you have pinched the required amount, burn the other end leaving a little extra. Make sure to seperate the pieces. take the pointed soldering iron and burn a small hole for the swivel. Wa La, poor mans slinky's.

Re: Slinky Question
Another question has anyone used the steel shot that they use for re-loading shotgun shells? Seems like it would work.

Re: Slinky Question
Iv'e used the steel shot and really like it, you end up with a real long slinkey that doesn't hang up very much. Only disadvantage is that they rust amd can make a mess in your vest after a while. My guess is that they are actually more enviorment friendly.

Re: Slinky Question
try using pencil lead...works just as well, gets down quicker, and you can feel the bottom better

Re: Slinky Question
I like using .195. I have found it works great. I dont know about weight, but I normally fish a 12 pellet rig. But I have all the way from 3 up to 17 for fast water. I don't have one of those slinky makers, but I find it seems to go faster if you just load a whole bunch up in the slinky cord, and then seal the end and slide up the prefered number of pellets, then cut it and seal it. Then just repeat until you are out, then refill the slinky cord.

Re: Slinky Question
Personally like to use 300's and 33's.. The super long ones seem to drag too much for me.. (IMHO)

Re: Slinky Question
I like the .250 as a first choice and the .210 as a second, use the candle flame like the others have mentioned and i'll use 4, 5, 6 , 8 , 10 in the bigger shot and make longer ones with smaller like 13 thru 17.. just my opinion.

Re: Slinky Question
I use .300 size shot. I am going to start buying the .300 Hornady Buck shot for my slinkies. I prefer to go short and heavy. Get down faster. Shorter weight.
