"Tom" of Tom's Outboard Repair in Milwaukie used to modify the shoes on jet pumps for better performance. He called this process "Hot Shoe". I think it mainly had to do with water flowing characteristics before the water gets to the impeller.

A mechanic who used to work on my outboard pump said he could increase the water flow by filing the width of the grating down and tapering the grates to a point. He used to do this for jet race boats. Maybe that is the 'Hot Shoe' thing??

I had that done to my shoe a while ago. Here's what's involved.

1) Intake grate bars are sharpened, both sides
2) impeller blades are sharpened
3) flat stock is added to the outside edges of the intake grate to act like a rudder
4) a piece of flat stock is sharpened and added to the back side of the intake grate to act as a scoop
5) I think Tom also worked on the liner and made sure all of the clearances were just a bit tighter than normal.
I also added a 4 blade stainless impeller and the difference was night and day.

This is on an old (1974) 16' Hewes River runner with a late 80's 115 merc. It will get up out of the hole and on a plane in just under it's hull length fully loaded with people and crab traps. Way worth doing in my opinion.

If you want to take a look at how it all goes together, let me know.

A person on a another board described what he did and said it made an improvement on his sled. He rounded the incoming side of his grating and sharpened the impellor side of the grating. Sounds like it should help the flow.

I've also seen other devices to deflect water into the intake. I don't know if they are worth the effort or not.
