This is a Silvies archery buck from last year. Straight North of Burns/Hines. Watch out for all the cow pies! This place is absolutely lousy with cattle and I will not hunt there again!

I always see quite a few deer in the unit. It is supposed to be a good unit for nice sized deer although I have never hunted it. There are some good road closures. If you plan ahead and put your camp in befopre the closure and bike in I suspect you may have a great hunt. I have been thinking of doing this for some time but just have not done it.

Amahnee, you hit that one dead one. Uh... the deer too. That place is lousy with cattle. That has to be one of the most mismanaged units in the state. You should see the riparian areas there. They are demolished! I have never seen damage like that anywhere. Good luck trying to get that changed there too. I had good connections with the USFS there. I have bowhunted that unit for over 10 years and have some decent success with da bulls. I have seen a few whopper bucks but not enough to make me deer hunt it much. There are much better units I think. I bowhunt elk and about every other year put in for a rifle tag for deer. Increase my hunting days! I put in for the silvies as my last choice. That probably is only because I know it pretty darn well. Hope that helps.

Sounds like I have a pretty parallel experience in the Silvies Unit. Do OK on the bulls but the bucks I either see HUGE bucks or little tiny 2x2--Where are all the dumb 3x3s at? I try to keep up with the cattle areas so I can narrow down where all the animals are NOT going to be.

Crayfin, That is too funny. That is exactly my strategy. Seems to work ok. As far as the dumb 3x3s go. I have noticed the same thing. I think there is something in the soil there. They go from a 2x2 straight to whopper size, skipping all the in between stuff. It is kinda like my theory on shed antler picking. I have some springs where I swear the animals are burying their sheds. I probably would if I was some big buck. No way I'd leave the evidence lying around.

This stuff is good to hear!

I was planning on having my wife put in for a silvies muzzleloader deer tag next year, but if things aren't any better than this, I'll go elsewhere. I wonder if it would make any real difference that the mz season starts in mid October instead of the biginning. Well, other than a bunch of them little bucks have already been put on ice.
