Halibut - Week 1, Day 1 - report
Okay, well I'll back up for a moment. (Day 0) Apparently the curse of the Newport Crab is gone... Pilar called with a report of 22 last night.
(Day 1) 6am - Pilar crosses Yaquina Bar aboard Bad Fish with as one of 3 crew aboard. Report of 5' swell and no wind. Headed west (Duh) - Didn't say which destination, but if I know Pilar, he's headed for the halibut drive-through and will hunt salmon at the pile on the return trip if the air-moving-around-stuff doesn't show.
Puffin was turned back by a power problem (spun prop?) :depressed:
Stay tuned to the fishing channel for updates...

Keep 'em coming girl.
Well at least thru today since I am stuck at work, maybe tomorrow I can be in a post rather than just reading them.
Puffin turned back   Isnt that like saying "Jumbo Shrimp" Lets hope none of the other dogs have to return to the den before the hunt is over.

If I know Puffin, he'll have a solution in a jiff and be back in the hunt in two shakes of a lamb's tail (ooh, sorry Keta!)

Thanks for the report OceanBlue. If you could find out how much lead was needed to fish effectivly at the Ranch and the Pile, that would be great.

Re: Halibut - Week 1, Day 1 - report
I expect I'll hear reports when they're within cell range. I'll add "how much lead" to my list of questions when I get the call. It'll be right up there with, "how many boats got shot" and "how much gear was lost to other boats".

Re: Halibut - Week 1, Day 1 - report
Just talked with Penny at the Port of Newport. First boats were back by 11:00am with limits of butts. Said she has seen some really nice ones unloaded so far. Lots of happy faces. She did not have a report for me on Salmon.
So there ya are. Your first live report. And yes there are still slips available on "A" and "J" docks.

Re: Halibut - Week 1, Day 1 - report
Just heard back from Pilar. Correction Pilar was fishing on Bad Fish today.
4 'butts for 4 fishers at about 40" ea.
1 Salmon for John at about 22lbs at the pile. Various bottom fish for all.
40oz lead at the ranch. Minimal drift.
Lots o big herring in the bay.
Puffin made it out as Bad Fish was leaving the ranch. He had to wait until the store opened to get a new prop.
Report is that Puffin limited on butts and is still out
Blubeast, Irish Mist and others all seemed to come away with limits. Stoygun Princess caught a big 'butt at the rockpile.
Water temp report - 58 at the ranch and clear blue as close as the pile.
State police in force at the Pile. Know your regs on Rock Fish retention.
South Paw, I'll buzz you.
Ocean Blue - out.

58 degree water..... Hmmmmph, Might be able to find some Albacore. Just gotta find the tempature breaks. As well as a good supply of baitfish, herring, sardines etc. I wouldnt be suprized if someone managed to get a albie anytime soon... For now lets target those biggie butt's. Will be fishing out of newport tomorrow. Will report back tomorrow night.

Haven't heard about Aquaholic. I know that Puffin was out there with KJ for a bit.
South Paw - Meet Puffin at the ramp at 0530 or if you're driving down the evening prior, you can catch up with him at the house next door to James'.

Re: Halibut - Week 1, Day 1 - report
I have friends leaving their boat at my place for the butt season. They got in early with 5 limits of butts to 44", 3 nice lings and a few large blacks from the Rock Pile.
They had a great time and no one lost their breakfast or lunch.

Re: Halibut - Week 1, Day 1 - report
Puffin got his buys their fish and was going to wait for some bigger ones later on in the year. But he picked up a 42" on the north end of the pile and . He attributes his problems in the morning to one of his crew bringing the forbidden fruit on board.
We ended up with 2 butts and 3 lings. A great day on the water.
