Klamath Tribes Lawsuit Against PacifiCorp
I'm not sure how interesting this will be to others, but it's certainly some interesting news at this end of the state.
Short story is that the Klamath Tribes is suing PacifiCorp for $1 Billion (yes, with a "b") for compensation of salmon runs into the Klamath Basin that were lost when PacifiCorp built their hydroelectric project on the Klamath River. This project currently includes 4 dams, plus one that is owned by BLM but managed contractually by PacifiCorp. PacifiCorp contends that restoring salmon runs on the Klamath River would cost $100 million, and therefore has not included plans to do so in its relicensing application, which was just recently filed.

Looks like the ante just got upped in that re-licensing poker game.
That news hasn't reached this far north yet, so thanks for delivering it!

There are quite a few of us that have said for a long time that only when the tribes call in their treaty covered bets would people truly understand the cost of not taking care of our fish runs.
Some people complain that it costs too much to preserve these fish. The time may be here for people to get an education on the costs of not preserving them.

Gotta say if I have to choose affordable power or salmon I choose the power. The tribes can jump in the lake.

Fish_on,that's the exact attitude that got us in this situation. Screw the fish,we want cheap power. Sadly this is what is wrong with many of our fish ecosystems, greed is the engine that drives this train. Perhaps now the tribes can put pressure on the power generators to do the right thing.

I agree Freespool.
That attitude also ignores the devastating effect no salmon would have on our NW economy. It would be way further reaching than the vacuum packed view that it would only mean no fishing. Very shortsighted, which, as you say, is what got us here in the first place.

Re: Klamath Tribes Lawsuit Against PacifiCorp
I'm reading a book called "The Organic Machine: The remaking of the Columbia River" right now. It's a relatively short read, but VERY insightful into how "badly" we really needed the power that we traded the Columbia River to get.....
I HIGHLY recommend it.
