My day on the water with my best friends....
Started the day in the MC fishing for some shad and waiting for my friends to show......
They show and proceed to go upriver and fish....
We got one shad but it was slow so I decided to do a little sturgeon fishing after Dipnet's phone call saying she was in some fish I pulled anchor and took a 35 minute boat ride upriver and found my "friends" sturgeon fishing just below Dipnets mighty NorthRiver. I am so glad my friends and I decided to meet at the ramp at 7:30 and fish together, it was so much fun
The sturgeon fishing was and after my "friends" decided to scout some new water up from me and not hearing anything form them , I decided to go back to square one and hit the shad.
Hit the MC and laid an arse whoopin on the stinky shiny bricks. Probably brought thirty or better to the boat. Yo NorthRiver Rick, I got us plenty of halibut bait
Thanks ****** for the shad set up, it worked like a charm
Nothing like spending a day on the water with friends. I can almost taste the steak dinner that followed as well, almost
Well gotta go heat up my Top Ramen, taste much better than steak

Re: My day on the water with my best friends....
Hey Chris, the bite got better after you guys left, until Hoghunter and Spooled anchored down below us again later in the afternoon !! Not sure if it was the sonic waves from their music or the Genetron, but the bite died !!!!!
We ended the day about with a total of 24 sturgeon. Four were keepers that we released. Lot's of action compared to the last couple of salmon trips !! Caught them on smelt, herring and pickled squid.
Dipnet

Re: My day on the water with my best friends....
Man Chris, I feel your pain. I had a similar thing happen yesterday too. It started last weekend when a friend asked if I would like to fish with him next Saturday, as my other friend was going to Canada to look at some flowers in some garden up there. We agree to talk later in the week to get the meeting time and place set up. In the meantime, the horticulturist decides he isn't going to Canada after all, as being from Kentucky, the U.S. might not want him back, if they could get him to leave.
Well by Friday no word, so I call my friend to see whats up for Saturday. It seems he has been in touch with a certain "Hillbilly" who tells him that I am fishing with him. Fine I guess, but I told the "Hillbilly" that I had a commitment with someone else first and if it fell through, I would fish on the "S.S. Microwave"
I get a hold of my friend, only to find out that a Girl Scout  took my seat, do to his and the Hillbilly's conversation. Oh well, we will meet up and fish together and all will be fine. Anyway, the Girl Scout can probably outfish me 10 to 1, so I can't say it was a bad choice for my friend.
At the boat ramp with the "Hillbilly" at 7:30. No friend to meet up with. Cell phone call reveals he is already fishing, but tells us he is anchored up at the spot we talked about. No problem. Up the Channel we go to the spot... no friend . We decide to troll and look for him. Well it would have been a long troll to where we finally find him. No where near the original spot we talked about. Still, no problem, we will just anchor up next to him. Anchoring next to him would have been fine if we were in a CANOE. Oh well, we will just troll around the area, and go for sturgeon a little later. Well it isn't any fun trolling near anchored boats, so we decide to head out for sturgeon. We call our friend on the radio, but received no reply. Luckily, North River Rick hears us and says he will let our friend know that we are heading for sturgeon, as he is anchored next to him. Cool .
45 minutes later we are sturgeon fishing. About 30 minutes after that, here comes our friend. He blows by us without a word, and anchors above us. We call him on the phone and ask if we were in the wrong spot. Yep (my fault by the way). Well, we are getting some fish, so we decide to stay put a while. 30 Minutes later, our friend takes off, no call, no letter... nothing . We don't know what to think. A while later we decide to go upriver to try out some new spots. On our way up, we see our friend anchored up next to Dipnet, with a fish on. He is by the way, the master of this fishery . Once again, if we had a CANOE we could have anchored up next to him. But having a canoe, would have meant we would have had to leave the Genetron at home. Not an option, as you can imagine .
Upriver we get into some fish and call our friend to come up. No answer. We go back down river later and see Dipnet, but no friend. We fish a while below Dipnet and decide to leave. Run up to say bye to Dipnet, and head in.
As we are unloading the boat, our friend calls. We joke around and tease each other about the day. Then the phone goes dead. We call our friend several times, only to go directly to voice mail :depressed:. Hours later, our friend call us, to see what the plans for today are. We let him know, but he decides not to go.
I hope my friend understands that mis-communication on both sides played a major role in yesterday's fiasco, and that I would still like a seat on his boat. He is absolutely one of the best guys to fish next to on anchor, so I am sure actually being on his boat would be even more fun.
Nice seeing Dipnet, North River Rick, and Sturgeon 42 out there. And yes... nice seeing our friend out there .
As always, a fun day on the Hog Hunter with Terry.

Re: My day on the water with my best friends....
Hey TB,
Ended up dragging 35 of the little stink bombs home, hopefully I've gotten the shad lust out of my system and won't do that again for a while! What a mess. Ben stayed and helped package and clean up, as usual, so it wasn't too bad. He's the best.
Good to meet you and your family, appreciate the green slime starter fluid to get the shad machine fired up! That was fun.
I'm sure I'll see ya on the water, take care.

Re: My day on the water with my best friends....
I guess there is two sides to every story.. Mine doesn't look as good as it did before you posted... Thanks alot
It was all in fun guys, you know that
After yesterdays sturgeon trip, I am going to be demoted to sturgeon fry, I sucked yesterday
Oh yeah, one more thing before I go out to dinner with my "friends", I'm not sure what time zone your watch was set on yesterday but at 7:30 in Oregon I was at the ramp waiting like a prom queen getting stood up on prom night Almost 8:00 is when you called me and I had to leave my usual spot due to a conversation that took place between myself and a troller who thought he could come up and say a few "choice" words in front of my wife, daughter, and her friend about me being in "his" trolling lane. Of course I was anchored first and he didn't even have a rod out. I told him due to the circumstance with my passengers I will take the high road and leave but make no mistake Mr. blue and white seaswirl, I will finish our converstion with my "choice" words when we see each other again in the channel.
I am sure the Genetron had something to do with your watch not telling the right time so all is forgiven
I would have fished with you guys today but after that steak dinner I had last night with my "friends", I was so full that my stomach still hurts

Chris,
Always looking to go places, but no need to trade trips for info. An e-mail is plenty enough. Nice to see you and the family. Take care.

I'm not sure I'd recognize any of you guys, but this was a great thread!!!
But I'm still stunned, Tacklebuster. Somebody cussed you out in front of your wife and kids for being in "HIS TROLLING LANE?" Glad to know that "sportsman" is up there, I'll keep to Milwaukie.
Stunned. In front of the kids?? Cheers for taking the high road, and I'm glad I'm in a little aluminum!!!

Re: My day on the water with my best friends....
Yes indeed he did. A real class act this guy was. He also was nice enough to inform me I was lucky I had a boat full of women with me cause if not he might loose his temper. I know where I am going to pitch anchor for now on Maybe I'll be lucky next time and not have the women along

Re: My day on the water with my best friends....
Chris,
We saw you out there Saturday as well, you came up river and anchored about 1/4 mile below us. The same spot we talked about Friday, you didn't stay long so you must not have been into the fish, we did quite well, lots of shakers, just couldn't seem to put a keeper in the boat. 41 1/2 was the closest we came. Oh yeah, fished accross the river from that spot early in the morning, my brother in law sets the hook on his first fish, this thing swims right at the boat (he actually thought he lost it), then it takes a right turn and comes out of the water twenty feet from the boat..........10' oversize!!!! This was his first oversize, and he wasn't quite sure if he should keep reeling or clean up the mess he just made in the boat! It was a great fight, we kept track of the time and were respectful to the fish, got him up, removed the hook and all was well. What a great day, rookie catches the monster and was still talking about it yesterday.
See you out there.
Good luck,
Scott

Re: My day on the water with my best friends....
Scott- I thought that was you guys above us but I wasn't sure. I tried calling you on the radio but I guess you didn't hear me. I bet that 10 footer was awesome We got a hog a couple of weeks ago just below where you like to fish that was probably 8 to 9 foot. That area we were in Saturday was It's one of my favorite summer spots but looks like it's not producing yet. Congrats on the pig
Bernie- The only thing that kept me reserved is I had a couple of girl scouts in the boat working on a fishing project. I'll get my chance to finish the conversation soon I'm sure.....
If those my "friends" bring me I am sure they will be picked out of the "ditch" that they gave me Saturday ....

In response to many PMs and emails:
I hammer most Shad on a clear chartruese mini-grub twister tail on a 1/32 red head jig, with a four foot leader minimum. Also slide one little blood red bead down the leader on top of the jig head. They like anchovy scent too.
My own opinion, but smaller is better for Shad. In bright sunlight the smallest Dick Nites work well too. Don't forget the smallest Triple Teasers (green or pink insert) or plain ole' red and white or yellow Shad darts either.
Two foot dropper up to four foot dropper until you find where they are. Find em' you will catch em'.

That was about half way through the day. It ended up 'bout full.
