Old gear and nostalgia
With a couple nostalgia posts recently and Kentucky Hog Hunters Birdy buying bonanza, I thought it might be neat for everyone interested to post some pics of any old or special gear that they have.
Here is a pic of some of my stuff I pulled out. Most of it isn't really old, but some good stuff.
Top row from left is a Cardinal 4, Cardinal 3, Ambassadeur 6000 and Bantam 201-SG.
Next down is my first really nice drift rod - a Lamiglas S-glass rod it has a Bantam 350 mag on it in pic.
Next down from left to right is a bunch of Okies, some Lil' Guys, Birdys, then Glo-Go's.
Far left are two bags of Okies. Top bag are green and white and are the less desirable foam injected style. Lower bag are the old, plastic two piece okies in salmon egg orange color.
Far right is a Lil' Guy still in the package.
Obviously in the middle is about 30 packs of Birdys. Mix of colors - Rainbow, Flame/Yellow, Pink/White, Hot Pink and Bright Red.
Okay, let's see your treasures.

Re: Old gear and nostalgia
silver hilton, maybe a disease but you won't get thrown in jail for it and if all else fails you could sell em and use the money to feed the family, use em, catch fish and feed the family. Sounds like a pretty good disease if your gonna have one.

Re: Old gear and nostalgia
I have a fiberglass fishing rod that I received as a Christmas gift in 1973. My Dad bought it from Doughton Hardware in Salem. When the store was in buisness there was a gentleman there that made these custom steelhead rods. My rod is a traditional yellow "Eagle Claw" color and the guide wrappings are a work of art with a foil type thread and fancy wrapping patterns too. The very first steelhead I ever hooked was with this rod. Belive it or not , I still use this rod today. It still looks pretty good for being 30 years old and it still catches fish. In fact I like this rod for drift fishing even better than my GL3. If I can get my daughter to take a picture I will post it later.

Re: Old gear and nostalgia
I have a rod on the roof of my garage. It's an old fenwick fiberglass blank, made by my father to fish the Washougal. We moved away from Camas in 1973, so it's older than that. I have never fished the rod, but I'll carry it around until I die, because he made it.
The plugs, however, could be for sale. I think I may like the Brad's wiggler better than the old Storm variety.

Re: Old gear and nostalgia
Help me out here if you can. I have 2 rods that are about 5' long, square steel that is tapered and the handles are cork. Below the reel seat is the word " Speedlock" with a patent number. One rod has a bait cast reel with the name Kalamazoo Tackle Co., Sportsman 1721 Model E. If you know anything about gear like this or where i can get some info. please post. Thanks in advance. Re: Old gear and nostalgia
Boy oh boy, why on earth would you ever let family history like that get away for a few lousy dollars. Save it for your kid and teach him the value of a family tradition that should never die. I know it is a pain to sit on that kind of stuff, but it might just mean more to you when you get older. At the very least you will have something real neat to pass on to you kid or even his kid. Think about it before you sell it off to someone that will just re-sell it to make more $$$.

Re: Old gear and nostalgia
uhmw- yeah, they might be worth some money. You can check ebay or there are a couple of websites to find out the value. I would seriously consider whether or not you want to do that, however.
My grandfather gave me some gear recently. He's getting old and won't be around much longer. I've fished with most of the gear already, but now I think I'm just gonna put it away for a while. He gave me a rod that works perfect for sturgeon and some old lures.
I think I might use some of the stuff to decorate my house with. I've seen rods and reels that are all rigged up and attached to the walls. A while back someone suggested shadow boxes. These are the picture frames with depth to them. You could put the old wooden lures in these and put them on the wall.
Whenever I see my grandpa's old fishing pole, I think of him. I can't fish with him anymore, but at least I can remember the times we did.

Re: Old gear and nostalgia
I don't have much in the way of old salmon/steelhead tackle, just a beater ~1970 vintage Eagle Claw fiberglass spinning rod on which I got my first couple of Coho and steelies. It was my Dad's original steelhead rod, before he switched to Fenwicks and handed the EC down to me. It's semi-retired in a corner of the closet for now. Another couple of years, my boy will be old enough to give it a go; i'm gonna make sure he gets his first steelie on that one before I buy him a newer graphite rod to beat on. That'll make for a 3-generation (and counting, hopefully) heirloom.
Bass plugs, on the other hand... Early on as a kid, my Dad handed down an old rusty coffee can (sounds like one of those classic tall tale intros, but it's literally true in this case) full of nasty, crusted-up lures. I replaced all the rusty hooks and split rings, scrubbed off the oxidation, etc, and put them to use. One of my nicest bass ever came on an old L&S Mirro-Lure. After losing a few and getting older, I finally came to my senses and decided they were worth more to me as collectibles. Now, I'd sooner hand out the keys to my truck than let someone borrow one of those classic plugs.

Re: Old gear and nostalgia
I have a bunch of that stuff. I have an old Fenwick with a 201 SG on it. Just for kicks I rigged it up with red and whit Glo Go with a gold Eagle Claw hook, Remeber those? I also have an old small box full of old school drift bobbers, Glo Go's, Oakies, Ray Bobs and old real cork Corkies. Now I need to find a late 70's early 80's Vitage vest so I can have a complete Old School Steelhead outfit for show. I would like to put everything on display with some old pictures of my dad and uncle with fish taken in the late 70's.
I also have a bunch of old Eddie Pope Hot Shots, I buy evryone I can get my hands on.

Re: Old gear and nostalgia
Here is some of my Grandfathers gear. Some of it is left over from the pre-dam days.
Pflueger,Luxor,Shakespear, and Centauri reels. Mustad-beak hooks (92158)from Norway. Edgar Sealy&sons hooks from England. Malin's "Wilstabrite" stainless wire. Pacemaker casting and trolling nylon line. Pflueger Indiana spinners bulldog brand. Helin flatfish's. And I just don't get why there is so many half copper half silver blades. And those funny looking trebles with all that red feathery looking stuff really boggles the noggin.
Oh, and by the way there is no way in **** that I Could part with any of it.

Re: Old gear and nostalgia
Laid out all the stuff last night and went to snap a digital. NADA. Dead battery! Blasted!
recharging now so i'll try again tonight. I did love getting it all out and together, brought back some really good memories of the guys who owned the stuff. I hope my grandkids think of me someday when they look at my gear.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helvetica">Please please please do not sell these items until you have had them appraised by someone experienced in this. Old split cane rods in origional condition can be worth hundreds or even thousands. Also, the market for old lures can be hot - especially bass plugs. Call several fly shops in the area and ask them who they may recommend as an appraiser. Tell the appraiser that you're looking for the items' value for insurance purposes, not to sell them, lest he low-balls you hoping to pick up a few bargains himself. If you have the time, try to get several independant appraisals before making any decisions. Or, just give 'em all to me and I'll tell you what they're worth...

Re: Old gear and nostalgia
If anyone has plugs in the original boxes, keep those boxes. They add a lot to the value.
A lot of the bamboo rods aren't worth much, but some are worth thousands of dollars. There are several dealers on the internet (google "bamboo rod sale") and you'll get a list of folks who will be able to give you some values.
Personally, I don't understand the point of the collectable value, but there are a lot of folks who will pay pretty stupid prices for this stuff.

Re: Old gear and nostalgia
GBS,
Don't take it personally, son. Growing old isn't for wimps. Just because you can't see your beltbuckle any more, your joints creak worse than your boat trailer, and your kids can beat you at every video game, doesn't mean that life is worse. There are many good things about getting older.
When I can remember them, I'll tell you what they are...

Re: Old gear and nostalgia
My brother is a collector/dealer of fishing antiques, mainly lures. If anybody wants to get in touch with him to talk lures, send me an e-mail. He is one of the best. I have an old cane rod that belonged to a family friend and a fly reel and some lines, still in pkgs., that were my Dad's... no way would I ever sell them. Passing the old gear down in the family is great, no question. On the other hand, maybe your kids would rather inherit the proceeds of a $30k lure, just my $.02. lnf

Re: Old gear and nostalgia
I second and third the advice that you get an independent or several appraisals of the value of the plugs/lures and especially the rods. Make sure you dont mention selling them. Dont clean up the rods and take a chance of removing any identifying marks. If you decide to keep them, consider having a special rod restored. Going through my dads camper after he passed away, I found a bundle of bamboo rods and old reels that I hadn't seen since I was a kid. I grew up fishing a 9 foot bamboo fly rod, sooo I had 1 rod restored to use! Yuck--it looks cool as a display though.

Re: Old gear and nostalgia
My wife can't understand why I won't ever part with any of my fishing stuff.
This is precisely why. I want to be able to give my son my tackle and so on and so forth.
I have a neighbor, 63 years old with an extensive collection of rods, reels, lures and everything fishing. He has no children. He knows I feel the same way about this "stuff". I'm sure his "stuff" will some day be my son's "stuff".
Save everything! Don't sell it!

Re: Old gear and nostalgia
Good advice Gthfish. Here is another reason to have them appraised... insurance. Losing something sentimental in a fire would hurt; finding out it was worth a small fortune could... hurt worse. :depressed: Here is another fun fact - to a collector, a box or the paperwork in the box, may be worth more than the contents. Sometimes the old gear isn't worth much money-wise; on the other hand, antique lures have traded hands for $50k+

Re: Old gear and nostalgia
I loved seeing all of the old pictures of fishing tackel .I agee with decorating a room in your house . Many years ago my wife bought an old sign for me for Christmas . It said Sportsman Lodge . Iv!e finally found a proper place of honor for it above my den . Many years ago i used to guide on the lower Deschutes so you can imagion how much of the tackel and old reels that i have to decorate with . I have some old bamboo and a Fenwick made out of Boron rods , that has to be displayed . Fenwick quit makeing them because they were expensive and didn!t hold up well . They kept having to replace them from breaking under normal use . I was lucky because i have landed thousands of summer steelheads on that rod . I haven!t fish it for ten years at least , and will not part with it .I liked the comments from Silver Hilton . they were excellant . I wish i coukd write and be that funny ,but i keep forgetting what to say . Oh well ......
